Andrzej Dobber (* 28. May 1961 in Więcbork , Poland ) is a Polish opera singer and "is considered one of the leading Verdi - Baritone " worldwide. In 2012 he was awarded the silver Gloria Artis Medal for cultural merits by the Polish Minister of Culture and in 2015 he was awarded the honorary title of Hamburger Kammersänger “for his outstanding services to the Hamburg State Opera”.

Life

Training and first steps

His career began at the Kraków Academy of Music , where he completed the master class of Helena Łazarska , which trained him as a bass player , in 1986. With his juicy voice, Dobber won several international competitions: in 1983 the Kiejstut-Bacewicz Chamber Music Competition in Łódź (1st prize) and in 1983 the Antonín Dvořák Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary (2nd prize) and in 1985 the Ada Sari Competition in Nowy Sącz (2nd prize). His stage debut took place in 1986 at the Cracow Opera , where he played the role of Prince Gremin in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin . In the same year Dobber received a scholarship at the Meistersinger Conservatory (now the Hochschule für Musik ) in Nuremberg , where he was also committed to the State Theater (1987-1991). There he worked closely with the then General Music Director Christian Thielemann , who induced him to switch from bass to baritone . In 1987, already as a baritone, he took 3rd place in the New Voices competition . Two years later, Andrzej Dobber won the Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition a . a. crowned audience favorite. The following year he took 1st place at the ARD International Music Competition .

Frankfurt Opera

After changing to the baritone field, Andrzej Dobber was a member of the Frankfurt Opera for three seasons , where he a. a. the role of Onegins in the opera of the same name by Tchaikovsky and that of Heerrufer in Lohengrin . He always expanded his repertoire, gave his first guest performances, including at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and, for example, appeared as Escamillo first in Vienna in 1992, then in 1993 at the Berlin State Opera and finally in 1995 at the Polish National Opera .

Komische Oper Berlin

In 1994 Andrzej Dobber became a member of the Komische Oper Berlin , where he played as Giorgio Germont in La traviata , Fjodor in The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitesch and the Virgin Fewronija , Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor , Leander in L'amour des trois oranges , the Music teacher in Ariadne on Naxos and as Orestes in Elektra . The Polish baritone was also a regular guest on the Cologne opera stage : in Eugen Onegin (1995), Figaros Hochzeit (1995), Neues vom Tage (1996) and in Die Vögel (1999). At the end of the 1990s, his guest appearances at other opera houses became a regular feature. Therefore he was u. a. 1997, starred in the title role of Verdi's only Polish production of Simon Boccanegra . The following year he took part in the world premiere of Siegfried Matthus Farinelli or The Power of Singing in the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe as King Philip V of Spain.

Worldwide career

In 2000 Andrzej Dobber toured Japan with La Scala as Monterone in Rigoletto . In the next season he also appeared on the Milan stage, namely as Count Luna in the opera Il trovatore , which was shown on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Verdi's death, under the direction of Riccardo Muti . With this role he also took part in the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino for the first time . He returned in 2001 as Ezio in Attila under the direction of Fabio Luisi and in 2002 as Macbeth under the direction of Eimuntas Nekrosius at the world-famous opera festival in Florence.

In the next few years Andrzej Dobber took his well-deserved place on the world stage with his outstanding Verdi voice. Since then, engagements have taken him to the most important opera houses in the world. In 2002 he appeared as Don Giovanni at the French Opéra Orchester national Montpellier . He convinced the Berlin audience as Sergeant Lescaut in Manon Lescaut by Puccini, which was performed in 2004 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin . In 2005 he made his US debut as Rigoletto under the direction of James de Blasis at the Cincinnati Opera . Two years later, Dobber took the stage at the Metropolitan Opera in New York for the first time : there he appeared as Amonasro in Verdi's Aida under the baton of Kazushi Ono . In 2008 he returned to France with Luisa Miller , which was performed at the Opéra Bastille in Paris under the direction of Massimo Zanetti .

He has appeared on stage in many roles, for example in the title role of a new production of Alexander Borodin's Prince Igor , as Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana , as Tonio in Pagliacci , as Macbeth and Rigoletto . In the new production of Aida he was able to record a great success as Amonasro . The singer could also be heard in Hamburg as Giorgio Germont in La traviata , Jochanaan in Salome , as Count Tomsky in Pique Dame and Amfortas in Parsifal . In the 2013/14 season he made his role debut as Doge Francesco Foscari in Verdi's I due Foscari . The early work was part of the Verdi trilogy “Verdi im Visier”, which won the “Opera Award”, on the occasion of the composer's 200th birthday. In 2015 he appeared as the jealous Sheriff Jack Rance in the new production of Puccini's La Fanciulla del West .

Based on a proposal by the Hamburg State Opera , Dobber was awarded a Hamburg Chamber Singer in 2015 by a resolution by the Hamburg Senate . The award was presented on February 21 by the Senator for Culture Barbara Kisseler on the stage of the Hamburg State Opera.
