Helena Łazarska (pronounced: Vasarska ; born August 15, 1934 in Posen ) is a Polish opera singer (lyric and lyric coloratura soprano ) and singing teacher .

life and career

Łazarska first had singing lessons with Erazma Janowicz-Kopaczynska in Krakow , then she continued her studies at the music academy there and successfully completed her training in 1960. She then attended master classes in Paris (with Pierre Bernac ), Weimar (W. Fischer) and Milan (with Elvira de Hidalgo , Maria Callas' teacher ).

1964 to 1972 Łazarska worked as a soloist at the Silesian Opera in Bytom . Her repertoire included roles in Mozart's operas (Ilia, Susanna and Contessa, Zerlina and Elvira, Pamina) as well as Bizet's Micaela in Carmen , Puccini's Liu ( Turandot ) , Tchaikovsky's Tatjana ( Eugene Onegin ) , Gounod's Margarethe ( Faust ) , Leoncavallos Nedda ( Pagliacci ) , Verdi's Desdemona ( Otello ) , some of which she sang in Polish.

Łazarska performed in numerous European countries. In the former Soviet Union, South America, she has given opera roles as well as recitals. In addition, Łazarska has also participated in festivals in Prague, Barcelona, ​​Paris, Avignon, the Holland Festival and the Warsaw Autumn . Her repertoire ranges from baroque repertoire to contemporary music.

The singer has also sung on many recordings and at world premieres, both in Poland and in Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands.

Her career as a singing teacher began in the early 1970s. She initially taught at the Polish music academies in Katowice , Gdansk and Cracow, where she was head of the singing department for many years. Since the late 1970s she was also in demand as a singing teacher at opera houses on the Baltic Sea and in Krakow. In 1987 she was offered a position at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where she became a professor. Since 1991 she has been teaching solo singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna .

Łazarska is a jury member of international competitions in Geneva , Prague , Paris , Salzburg , Vienna , Karlovy Vary , Warsaw , Caracas , 's-Hertogenbosch and Seoul . She also led well over 160 international master classes in Europe, Asia and America and is considered one of the most renowned singing teachers in Europe.

Helena Łazarska's students have won countless prizes at major international singing competitions.
