Elvira de Hidalgo , (born December 27, 1888 in Valderrobres , Aragón , Spain , † January 21, 1980 in Milan ) was a Spanish opera singer ( soprano ) and vocal teacher. Maria Callas was one of her students .

Life

Already at the age of twelve Elvira de Hidalgo was considered a musical prodigy and performed as a pianist at this age, then had her voice trained in Barcelona and with Melchiorre Vidal in Milan. She made her debut in 1908 at the age of 19 at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples as a raisin in the Barber of Seville . Her career developed quickly. In 1909 she made a guest appearance at the Théatre Sarah Bernhardt in Paris, then in Cairo and Monte Carlo. In 1910–1911 and in 1924–1926 she was engaged at the New York Metropolitan Opera . In 1916 she performed at La Scala in Milan , in 1919 at the Teatro Constanzi in Rome, and in 1922 at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In 1924 she was celebrated in London at the Coventgarden Opera as Gilda in Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto . A tour with the famous bass player Fyodor Chaliapin followed . The now world-famous artist married the director of the Ostend casino, where she has performed frequently since then.

Since 1932 she lived as a teacher on the Greek island of Corfu and then became a professor at the Athens Conservatory . Here she was the teacher of the famous soprano Maria Callas . From 1949–1959 she was a teacher at the Ankara Conservatory ; later she lived in Milan. With her coloratura soprano one admired the dark fullness of her voice, on the other hand the superior technique of her ornamental singing, which could later be rediscovered in the voice of her most famous student, Maria Callas.
