Location of the municipality of Herzebrock-Clarholz in the Gütersloh district
Herzebrock-Clarholz is a municipality in the Gütersloh district in North Rhine-Westphalia , it is located on the western edge of East Westphalia on the border with the Münsterland .
geography
Geographical location
In terms of nature, Herzebrock-Clarholz lies at the transition from the Kernmünsterland to the Ems sand plain and thus belongs to the Westphalian Bay . The municipality is characterized by the lack of special elevations and valleys , there is only 18 m difference in altitude (between 62 and 80 m above sea level ).
The eastern and northeastern municipal boundary is largely formed by the Ems , which has been straightened in several stages since the end of the 19th century and today has a canal-like bed. Several small streams flow towards it from the southwest. The Axtbach flowing through the Möhler and Clarholz , which rises in the Beckum Mountains and flows into the Ems in the Warendorf district , and the Poggenbach are worth mentioning .
The nearest major cities are Gütersloh (approx. 10 km) in the east, Rheda-Wiedenbrück (approx. 4 km) in the southeast, Oelde (approx. 10 km) in the south- west, Warendorf (approx. 16 km) in the north-west and Harsewinkel in the north (approx . 8 kilometers). The nearest large cities are Gütersloh (approx. 10 km) and Bielefeld (approx. 26 km) in the northeast as well as Münster in the west and Paderborn in the southeast, each a little over 40 km away.
geology
The medium-deep subsoil in the area of the municipality consists of marl and limestone from the Middle Ages . The youngest layers of the Upper Cretaceous , which consist of marl of the Campanium , reach up to the surface. Below are marlstones from Santonium and Coniacium up to 700 m thick and about 450 m thick limestones from Turonium and Cenomanium . To the northeast of Clarholz there are sands of low thickness. There are no significant sources of groundwater and the deep groundwater is salinized.
In the northern municipality area, nutrient-poor and drought-sensitive soils ( Podsole ) have developed, which today have an improved productivity due to the application of Plaggen (Plaggenesch). The deeper soil layers are often influenced by groundwater ( Gley podsoles). In lowlands and valleys, the soils are characterized by groundwater up to the surface, they are therefore natural grassland locations, but have largely been made usable as arable land through drainage measures.
In the southern municipality, pseudogleye are predominant. The loamy soils are sandy-clay, mostly densely packed and characterized by a pronounced alternation of waterlogging and drying out. They are therefore primarily suitable as grassland locations. The terrain slopes to the northwest towards the Ems .
Herzebrock-Clarholz is moderately suitable in the southern part to the northern part well for the use of geothermal heat sources by means of geothermal probes and heat recovery through heat pump heating (see the adjacent map).
Expansion and use of the municipal area
The community, classified as a large rural community, covers an area of 79.28 km². The predominant part consists of agricultural area and forest area, together around 84%, followed by built-up area and traffic area, together around 13.4%. The largest extension in north-south direction is 11.5 km, in east-west direction 11.6 km.

Neighboring communities
Herzebrock-Clarholz borders on Harsewinkel in the north, Gütersloh in the east, and Rheda-Wiedenbrück in the south-east . These towns and communities all belong to the Gütersloh district . In the southwest the community borders on Oelde and in the northwest on Beelen , both of which are located in the Warendorf district.
Community structure
According to § 3 of the main statute, the community is divided into the two localities Herzebrock (10,260 inhabitants) and Clarholz (6,241 inhabitants) (as of December 31, 2005), which correspond to the two former municipalities from which the present municipality was formed in 1970.
On December 16, 2009, this paragraph was deleted from the community's statutes with 18 votes from the SPD, FDP, UWG and GAL against 17 votes from the CDU. Since February 10, 2010 both localities exist again. The council followed a referendum by majority vote and reinserted § 3 in the main statute of the municipality.
The village Herzebrock include (clockwise from the north), the farming communities Bredeck , Quenhorn , Groppel , pixels , Brock and Mohler . In the past, what is no longer common today, Herzebrock was divided into Kirchdorf (the part around the parish church of St. Christina) and Postdorf (the part on today's B 64).
To the village of Clarholz Samtholz , Sundern , Oelkerort , Heerde and Holzhof . In Clarholz, in the Friedlandsiedlung development area with 134 apartments, 400 ethnic German repatriates , mainly from today's Poland, were settled in the 1970s , which at that time made up 10 percent of the district's population.
climate
Herzebrock-Clarholz belongs to the moderate climatic zone of Central Europe. It is in the range of the sub-Atlantic maritime climate. The winters are mostly mild under the influence of the Atlantic and the summers are moderately warm.
Due to the location in the sub-Atlantic maritime climate, a humid climate prevails all year round with relatively evenly distributed rainfall. Since precipitation data are not available for Herzebrock-Clarholz, values are given for the Harsewinkel station about 12 km away. There is a long-term average of 704 mm of precipitation per year, which is roughly the same as the German average (700 mm).
Temperature values are also not available for Herzebrock-Clarholz. At a weather station in neighboring Rheda-Wiedenbrück , an average temperature of 11.1 ° C was measured between 2002 and 2006.

history
In the second half of the 9th century the Benedictine convent Herzebrock was founded, in 1133 the Premonstratensian monastery Clarholz , with which a female branch of the order was originally connected in neighboring Lette . Both monasteries owned extensive property in their immediate vicinity. Together with the Marienfeld monastery , they formed the rural district in the Rheda reign . In the course of secularization , the monasteries were dissolved in 1803 by Count Moritz Casimir II of Bentheim-Tecklenburg . The choir women and gentlemen were expelled, the property fell to the counts and today's ducal house.
After the rulership of Rheda was mediatized and incorporated as a canton into the Grand Duchy of Berg , Herzebrock and Clarholz formed independent Mairien (mayor's offices) with Lette. This local administrative structure was retained after the former rule of Rheda was incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia. The mayor's offices of Herzebrock and Clarholz, administered jointly by a mayor, belonged to the district of Wiedenbrück in the administrative district of Minden . In 1851 the two mayor's offices were merged to form the Herzebrock Office , which consisted of the three independent municipalities of Herzebrock, Clarholz and Lette.
Herzebrock and Clarholz were conveniently located on the Chaussee from Münster to Paderborn and were connected to the railway network in 1887 with the connection from Münster to Lippstadt . On this basis, the beginnings of commercial development developed in the agricultural areas. The Claas company was founded in Clarholz and moved to Harsewinkel in 1919, while Miele was founded in Herzebrock in 1899 and relocated to Gütersloh in 1907 . The Cordes company was founded in Lette and is now part of the Miele company. All three companies specialized in the manufacture of technical devices for agricultural use ; Miele and Cordes also started manufacturing washing machines . The pressing, punching and hammering works, now the Paul Craemer company, moved into the production halls abandoned by Miele . Since the 1920s, an extensive furniture industry has developed on the basis of artisanal joineries.
As everywhere in Germany, during the Nazi regime there was systematic exclusion and persecution of the Jewish inhabitants, who eventually either fled or were deported to ghettos or concentration camps: a total of 27 people from Herzebrock were murdered there by the Nazis. Only one Jewish family returned to the community after the war.
Christianity
In the predominantly Catholic communities, the influx of refugees and displaced persons after 1945 gave rise to Protestant community life, which was reflected in the construction of churches in both districts. Today Herzebrock and Clarholz form a parish in the Protestant parish of Rheda .
Denomination statistics
According to the 2011 census , 18.3% of the population in 2011 were Protestant , 61.5% were predominantly Roman Catholic and 20.2% were non-denominational , belonged to another religious community or did not provide any information. The number of Protestants and Catholics has fallen since then. Currently (as of January 7, 2020) 15.9% of the population are Protestant, 53.3% Roman Catholic and 30.8% are non-denominational or belong to another religious community.
Incorporations
As part of the North Rhine-Westphalian territorial reform, the two communities of Herzebrock and Clarholz were merged on January 1, 1970 to form the new community of Herzebrock with the "Law on the reorganization of the Wiedenbrück district and parts of the Bielefeld district" of December 4, 1969. Parts of the parish of Kirchspiel Oelde ( Amt Oelde , Kreis Beckum ) and a parcel of land from the city of Gütersloh were incorporated into the new community . The office of Herzebrock was dissolved, the legal successor is the municipality of Herzebrock or today Herzebrock-Clarholz. Lette, the third municipality of the dissolved office, as well as some parcels of the municipality Clarholz was incorporated into the city of Oelde (Beckum district, today Warendorf district ). This was preceded by a vote by the citizens of Letter, who voted with a majority of 78% in favor of joining Oelde. Later protests against this vote were inconclusive.
Since the beginning of the 1980s the Clarholz district had called for a double name to satisfy the bipolarity of the municipality, the North Rhine-Westphalian Minister of the Interior gave the municipality the name Herzebrock-Clarholz with effect from April 26, 1985.
Population development
The following overview shows the population of the municipality of Herzebrock-Clarholz and for 1939, 1950 and 1961 the population of today's municipality. coat of arms
Blazon : “Divided diagonally by green and silver (white) under a silver (white) wavy bar. In the green field a jumping silver horse, in the silver field a green oak tree. "
Crest Reason: In the right granted by the municipal reorganization in 1973 crest the colors and symbols of the coat of arms were taken over the towns and Herzebrock Clarholz. Both heraldic symbols are speaking symbols and are derived from etymological explanations of the place names: Herzebrock von Horsabruch (etymologically dubious interpretation: horse pasture) and Clarholz von Claholte and Cleholte (forest on Kleiboden ). The wave bar indicates the water-rich area on the edge of the Ems. |
Town twinning
A partnership with Le Chambon-Feugerolles in the canton of the same name in France has existed since 1973 . Every year there are exchanges between youth and adult groups from both municipalities.
In 1994 the partnership with the municipality of Brederwiede ( Netherlands ) was established, which was opened up in 2001 as part of a municipal reorganization in the city of Steenwijk and in 2003 in Steenwijkerland . The partnership is a reminder of the relationship between the Clarholz monastery and the province of Overijssel during the Middle Ages.
Culture and sights
Buildings
Herzebrock Benedictine Convent
From the monastery, which was dissolved in 1803, parts of the buildings from the extensive new construction phase at the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries still exist. Mention should be made of the abbey and convent building, in which, in addition to the abbess's apartment, the dormitory and refectory of the nuns were also located. The elongated rectangular main building has a protruding east wing and is built in rubble stone masonry. Parts of the old cloister are still preserved on the west side. On the west side of the former cloister courtyard is the house of the lay sisters, which today serves as the parish center. On the east side of the farmyard there is also the rectory, which was completed in 1712.
Parish Church of St. Christina Herzebrock
A single-nave Gothic church was added to the Romanesque tower from the 12th century in 1474, which was expanded into a basilica in 1899/1901 according to plans by the Paderborn cathedral builder Arnold Güldenpfennig and provided with a transept. The central nave of today's church and the choir are still preserved from the late Gothic construction phase.
The central nave extends over four vaulted bays, of which the three western vaults are richly decorated with plant ornaments. The nun's gallery was located here for the secularization of the monastery. The gallery itself was demolished in 1901. The altar, side altars and pulpit are neo-Gothic works from the Wiedenbrücker sculpture school.
Lordemann's Chapel Herzebrock
In 1661, the monastery secretary Heinrich Lordemann had a baroque chapel built on the old Poststrasse on a square floor plan. After the inauguration of the Herzebrock Hospital, this was expanded to the east and served as a hospital chapel until the hospital was closed.
Herzebrock church square
The largely closed church square development is mainly characterized by eaves-standing half-timbered buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries, some of which are plastered or slated. Kirchplatz 13 is particularly attractive . The two-story eaves house from 1730, the upper floor of which protrudes far over Knaggen , was built through in 1979.
Parish Church of St. Laurentius Clarholz
A basilica originally attached to the mighty Romanesque west block with a few round arches and slits, of which the apses of the side aisles are still present. In the 14th century , the Romanesque church was converted into a Gothic hall church and expanded to include a new choir. The late Romanesque crucifixion group made of Baumberger sandstone is remarkable on the exterior. In the interior, the vault paintings should be mentioned, from which the division into the monastery and parish church can still be read. While the painting of the vaults in the nave, which is reserved for the community, is relatively simple, the choir and transept, which were used exclusively by the convent of the monastery, are richly painted. Particularly noteworthy is the rich animal symbolism in the south transept.
Clarholz Premonstratensian Monastery
The most important testimony to the monastic period is the building for the prophet , built by master builder Nikolaus Wurmstich from Lippstadt between 1705 and 1707 under the aegis of Provost Elbert von Kückelsheim . The brick building rises on a plastered sandstone floor. The sandstone reveals of the windows and the corner blocks contrast with the red of the bricks in the masonry. The three central window axes emerge like a risalit and are crowned by a triangular gable. A flight of stairs leads to the richly decorated portal to the building, which documents the abbot's baroque need for representation.
South of the parish church is the former convent house, which today serves as the parish center. The buildings of the farm yard and the tithe barn with documentation on the local history are also still preserved.
Clarholz church square
In the area of the church square there are still some older residential buildings, including the “Gasthaus Rugge”, a stately half-timbered building from 1667, and the listed Gildemeister-Samson house. The latter is a brick building with a double flight of stairs, which was built in 1843 by the architect Conrad Niermann in simple classicist forms. The house belongs to the Clarholz monastery ensemble and is located directly on the B 64 (Wiedenbrück - Münster). Parts of the contemporary interior have been preserved. In the gallery rooms of the Samson house there is the permanent exhibition of the group 13 artist community as well as a gallery department for guest exhibitions.
Möhler Castle
Möhler , first mentioned in the 11th century , became the property of the Barons von Ketteler at the beginning of the 18th century, who had a two-winged aristocratic residence built between 1710 and 1715, presumably in place of a previous building from the Renaissance. Only the main wing of the typical Westphalian manor house is preserved today. The two side wings were torn off. The castle is privately owned and not freely accessible.
theatre
There are no regular theater performances in Herzebrock-Clarholz. The auditorium of the Boland School is used for irregular performances, for example school performances.
Museums
The Herzebrock home parlor is located in the abbey and convent building of the Herzebrock Benedictine monastery and is looked after by the Herzebrock home association . On display are exhibits on the history of the monastery and the history of the village from the fields of agriculture, industry and handicrafts.
Between June 2007 and October 2008 the museum in the cellar will be maintained in the rooms of the "Kellnerei" of the Provost's Clarholz . There 18 paintings from the art school Cusco from South America are shown. Guided tours through the church and the monastery complex are also possible by appointment.

Parks
Before their secularization, the buildings of the two monasteries Herzebrock and Clarholz were embedded in extensive gardens, which consisted of kitchen gardens for the needs of the monastic communities and ornamental gardens for the recreation of the choirs. Since 2000, both gardens have been redesigned based on baroque gardens, giving an impression of the traditional way in which the monastery buildings are embedded in their surroundings. The monastery garden in Clarholz is about 5 hectares, the monastery garden in Herzebrock about 3.8 hectares. The outdoor facilities are open to the public.
The above mentioned Möhler Castle has a reconstructed baroque garden of about 3.5 hectares. An outside inspection is possible, access to the garden is only possible after prior registration.
Natural monuments
Herzebrock-Clarholz has a nature reserve with the Mersch . A total of 0.09% of the municipality is under nature protection.
There are six plane trees placed under protection on Holzhofstrasse in Clarholz.
Sports
societies
There are two large sports clubs in the municipality, each with several branches, the Herzebrocker Sports Club . and TSV Victoria Clarholz as well as a smaller one, DJK Eintracht Quenhorn. There is also the tennis club, TC in Herzebrock.
Skate park at the indoor pool
At the beginning of 1999 a skate park was built on the premises of the secondary and secondary school. With the help of the interest group Rollsport 4 & 8 (representing 4 rollers on a skateboard and 8 on inline skates) and some volunteers, the facility is technically maintained. In recent years the park has been fundamentally rebuilt in order to meet the changing demands.
Regular events
The St. Hubertus shooting club in Heerde celebrates its shooting festival on the last weekend in August. The City Festival also takes place in Herzebrock in September and the Laurentius Kirmes in Clarholz in August .
On Thanksgiving Day , a Thanksgiving parade held every year in Clarholz. The “Thanksgiving Community Clarholz-Sundern” advertises that this move is the largest thanksgiving parade in Germany.
On an Advent weekend, a Christmas market takes place in Herzebrock around the church square.
Culinary specialties
The pumpernickel from the Rohmann country bakery, which has been made in the stone oven since 1911, is very popular far beyond the municipality's borders. The company even maintains a shipping service due to the national demand.
Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
In the past, the Münster - Paderborn postal route ran through Clarholz and Herzebrock. In the first half of the 19th century, the old connection between the two episcopal cities was expanded to the Chaussee. Until today this is the main artery of the municipality as the B 64 . The A 2 can be reached in a few minutes via the junction “Herzebrock-Clarholz” or “Rheda-Wiedenbrück”.
In 1887 the Münster – Rheda-Wiedenbrück – Lippstadt railway line , which was laid parallel to the Chaussee, was opened, of which the section between Rheda-Wiedenbrück and Lippstadt has meanwhile been largely dismantled. The railway line also runs through the town directly parallel to today's main road. Passenger traffic today takes place on the Warendorfer Bahn every hour (every two hours on Sundays) between Münster and Bielefeld with stops in Herzebrock and Clarholz through the Eurobahn . The former continuous bus route Münster - Lippstadt was also divided into several lines. Regiobus lines connect both districts with the neighboring cities of Warendorf, Gütersloh and Oelde.
Herzebrock-Clarholz lies at the intersection of three regional airports . The Paderborn / Lippstadt airport is about 50 km, the Münster / Osnabrück Airport about 60 km away. The Dortmund airport is located around 68 km away.
In Herzebrock-Clarholz, as in neighboring Münsterland, there is traditionally a lot of cycling . Many well-developed (rural) farm roads, so-called "Pättkes", are helpful here. The Emsradweg , a long-distance cycle path from the source to the mouth, runs in the north of the municipality .
Established businesses
The largest employer in the community (as of 2010) is the Steinel Group , a manufacturer of lights and sensors with more than 1,000 employees worldwide. It has its headquarters in the municipality and also has a plant here. The Craemer Group , with more than 600 employees active in metal forming and plastics processing, is also headquartered here. Many parts of the arvato AG company are located in the municipality. The companies Weeke Bohrsysteme ( Homag Group ), the Lübbering Group, Rippert Anlagentechnik, Disselkamp Schlafraumsysteme or adeco Türfüllstechnik are also based here.
The two global companies Miele and Claas have their origins in Herzebrock-Clarholz, but later moved to Gütersloh and Harsewinkel . Tönnies still has a plant in the municipality, a much larger one in Rheda-Wiedenbrück.
Today, Herzebrock-Clarholz is shaped by many medium-sized companies. Traditionally, companies in the furniture industry and meat processing have a large share. In the meantime, however, metal and plastic processing companies as well as companies from the electrical industry are becoming increasingly important for the community's economy.
The formerly independent Volksbank Clarholz is now part of the Volksbank in Ostmünsterland based in Harsewinkel. The Volksbank in Herzebrock is part of the Volksbank Bielefeld-Gütersloh .
Of the 6,785 employees in Herzebrock-Clarholz (as of 1997), around 4% work in the primary sector (agriculture), 63% in the secondary sector (manufacturing industry) and around 30% in the tertiary sector (services).
On the A 2 , in the Marburg district in the border area of the cities of Oelde and Rheda-Wiedenbrück , there is an interregional industrial area under construction , which is being marketed under the name "Aurea - the A-2 economic center". The municipality of Herzebrock-Clarholz and the cities of Oelde and Rheda-Wiedenbrück open up a total of approx. 150 hectares of commercial space. The specially created motorway connection, the “Herzebrock-Clarholz” junction, was inaugurated in September 2008 and opened to traffic.

The Adult Education Center Reckenberg-Ems offers a wide range of further education.
With three youth centers, the Pentagon youth center , the St. Christina youth leisure center, the Klein Bonum youth center and, in addition, the youth clubs of the Protestant parish , there is a wide range of options to choose from.
There is no hospital in Herzebrock-Clarholz, so the facilities of the surrounding cities and communities must be used.
The Protestant community in Herzebrock and the Catholic St. Laurentius community in Clarholz each have a public library. There is a school library in the Hauptschule and Realschule.
The Herzebrock-Clarholz volunteer fire brigade maintains four fire engines , one each in the districts of Clarholz, Herzebrock, Möhler and Quenhorn, and a youth fire brigade .
education
The municipality offers three primary schools and, since 2012/2013, a comprehensive school, which has completely replaced the two previous secondary schools and secondary schools since the 2017/18 school year. A gymnasium upper level will be set up for the 2018/19 school year. For other types of schools, offers from the surrounding towns and communities must be used, in particular the high schools in Rheda-Wiedenbrück and Harsewinkel.
In 2006, a total of 1,589 pupils were taught at the municipal schools with 100 teachers, of which around 52% were in elementary schools, 23% in secondary schools and 26% in secondary schools.
Since the founding of the adult education centers in North Rhine-Westphalia in the 1970s, the community has been a member of the Adult Education Center Reckenberg-Ems , the association of the municipalities of Rheda-Wiedenbrück, Rietberg, Herzebrock-Clarholz and Langenberg.
