The Mersch is a nature reserve designated in 1948 with a size of 6.74  hectares in Herzebrock-Clarholz and thus the third smallest nature reserve in the Gütersloh district . It is the only nature reserve in the municipality. The area is completely privately owned and is listed with the number GT-012.

The Mersch is a break area with predominant alder and was designated to preserve the remarkable flora with orchids , sedges and mosses and to preserve the species-rich bird life that occurs here. It is located in a flood channel of the Ur- Ems and is regularly under water in spring. the occurrence of the water feather is remarkable .

Mersch is an expression for marsh (alluvial land), so it indicates regular flooding.
