The gray heron colony near Harsewinkel is about 1 km west of Harsewinkel and about 100 m south of the Ems in the Gütersloh district . Since 2007, and initially limited to the year 2027, the approximately 4- hectare site has been designated as a nature reserve.
The area serves to preserve, develop and restore important habitats for rare and endangered regionally typical animal and plant species. In particular, there are breeding grounds for gray herons in the swamp and swamp forests that are found here, which surround a near-natural still water . According to the avifaunistic report of the city of Harsewinkel, a total of 42 occupied nests with numerous young birds were to be found in 2014. The first eyries were established by the herons in 1965.
A pair of eagle owls and kingfishers also breed in the gray heron colony.
