The nature reserve Johannisegge-Schornstein is a nature reserve in the area of the city of Borgholzhausen with a size of 225.47 ha. The area is near the state border with Lower Saxony and is led with the number GT-035. The Weser-Ems watershed runs nearby .

The area was designated for the conservation of beech deciduous forests that have grown on extreme south and south-west orientations and that have emerged from coppice forest management .

The Luisenturm

A wooden observation tower was built on the Johannisegge ( 291  m ) in 1893 in memory of Luise von Prussia . Today the fourth Luisenturm, which was inaugurated in 1991 with a height of 21 meters, offers a view of the entire city area. In good visibility conditions, the view extends to Porta Westfalica in the northeast, and far into the Münsterland to the southwest. The Luisenturm is located directly on Hermannsweg , a 156 km long hiking trail that leads from Rheine to Velmerstot in Lippe.

The Bönker quarry , which is used by the city of Borgholzhausen for events (for example theater performances), is located on the southern area .

In the center of the area, but not part of the nature reserve, is a disused NATO station, which was used between 1958 and 1983 by the Dutch Air Force and in part also by the armed forces of the United States . The fenced-off area now serves as a refuge for bats and is the location of two wind turbines, which can supply up to 14% of Borgholzhausen households with electricity.
