The Hörste wet meadows are a nature reserve with a size of 531.32 hectares in Halle (Westphalia) . This makes them the largest nature reserve in the Gütersloh district . The area is managed with the number GT-005, is partly owned by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and also FFH area (managed under the name Ruthebach, Laibach, Loddenbach, Nordbruch ). It consists of four individual areas. 471.6 hectares of the area were placed under protection in 1989.

In particular, it was designated for the preservation of moist, open grassland, a traditional curlew breeding area and endangered plant communities of the wet and wet meadows.

It is a lowland area through which the Alte Hessel , the Neue Hessel and the tributaries Ruthebach , Laibach and Loddenbach flow. The groundwater is very high here, so humid to wet grassland communities predominate over large areas. The vegetation of this area, which arose from centuries of constant cultivation, was still widespread in the entire region a few decades ago, but the majority of the landscape was made intensively manageable through drainage. The areas of the nature reserve, on the other hand, are gradually being bought up by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and leased back to farmers who, in return, commit themselves to merely extensive farming.

With 62 species represented on the Red List of Threatened Species of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and another 22 species on the State's warning list, the area is of outstanding importance for species protection.

flora

In the nature reserve, the ryegrass - white clover willow is by far the most common . Oats , marsh marigolds and rushes also settle here . At one point flood turf appears in the form of a kinky foxtail lawn. In spring, besides the marsh marigold , meadowfoam , primrose , buttercup and the cuckoo's light carnation also bloom . There are also tremendous grasses , the grape brine , the marsh willowherb and the devil's bite that are widespread and present in significant stocks . Other types of plants include the common hedgehog hose and the two-leaved forest hyacinth .

fauna

The lapwing and curlew are the most prominent birds in this area. Less conspicuous, but also endangered, are the bat species, great noctule bat and pipistrelle, and the insect species such as the field grasshopper , the marsh hermit , the short-winged sword insect , the banded demoiselle , the lesser garnet-eye , the southern and glossy rush damsel and the aurora butterfly .
