The field grasshopper ( Chorthippus apricarius , syn .: Glyptobothrus apricarius ) is a short- antennae insect (Caelifera) from the family of field locusts and belongs to the subfamily of grasshoppers (Gomphocerinae). There is hardly any precise information about the frequency and distribution in Germany. But it is still quite common.
description
Both sexes are essentially yellow-brownish on the upper side, in places also greenish and slightly spotted. The underside is lighter. The females are slightly larger than the males. In the field, the species can be clearly recognized by its utterance. They only sing in the sunshine. The singing consists of stanzas usually about two seconds long, the syllables of which consist of a ticking sound and two sibilants, reminiscent of a small steam locomotive (hence the Dutch name Locomotiefje). The stanzas start a little quieter and end abruptly at full volume. The singing can be heard and clearly recognized by people about 10 m away. As a commercial chant in the direct vicinity of a female, the stanzas become considerably longer.
habitat
The species prefers dry, warm locations with grass vegetation, also roadsides or embankments.
Way of life
The species feeds on grasses.
distribution
The species occurs in suitable locations throughout Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France. However, the British Isles are not populated.
