Sami Solanki (2012)

Sami Khan Solanki (born October 2, 1958 in Karachi , Pakistan ) is a Swiss astronomer . Since 2001 he has been honorary professor of astronomy at the ETH Zurich and director of the department for solar and heliosphere research at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research .

Life

In 1987 Solanki received his doctorate from the ETH Zurich. From 1987 to 1989 he was a post-doc in St. Andrews, Scotland. In 1992 he completed his habilitation . In 1998 he was professor of astronomy at the University of Oulu in Finland. In 1999 he took on a Minnaert visiting professorship at the University of Utrecht . In the same year Solanki became director at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research.

In 2001 he was awarded an honorary professorship at the ETH Zurich, followed in 2003 by another at the TU Braunschweig. In 2006 Solanki became an Associate of the Royal Astronomical Society . In 2015 he was awarded the Julius Bartels Medal of the European Geosciences Union .

He is a scientific member of the Max Planck Society and chairman of the International Max Planck Research School for Solar System Science at the University of Göttingen . He is the chief editor of Living Reviews in Solar Physics , an online review journal on solar physics and related fields.

Act

Solanki's main research interests are the physics of the sun and the heliosphere, in particular solar magnetism and sun-earth relationships, the astrophysics of the stars, in particular star activity and magnetism, astronomical tests for gravitational theories, atomic and molecular physics in relation to astronomy, protoplanetary rotating disks and extrasolar Planetary systems and radiation transfer of polarized light.

He made contributions to the observatory for sun and heliosphere SOHO Virgo, STEREO Secchi, and to the observatory for solar dynamics SDO HMI.

Solanki's research is viewed differently in the context of the global warming controversy . He sees a possible influence of the sun: ... the influence of intensified solar radiation on the ozone layer and the degree of cloud cover could influence the climate more than the direct solar radiation itself. However, in the development since 1980 he considers human influence to be a priority. Solanki sees further research needs; the topic is being worked on intensively in connection with climate change in geological time periods. A 'hard mechanism of action' has still not been found. The approaches of Solanki and the like by other researchers are reflected in the IPCC reports, and a partial contribution from the sun is recognized alongside the main human causes.

In 2019, he rejected the claims made by AfD boss Alice Weidel that the sun and not humans are the cause of the currently measured global warming. Although solar activity increased in the first half of the 20th century, solar activity decreased in the last few decades, when the earth warmed up significantly. Therefore, the sun could not be responsible for global warming over the past 50 years.
