Characteristic

The protected area located between Stukenbrock and Augustdorf and adjoining the Senne military training area is characterized by the box valley of the Ölbach stream , its dry valley adjoining the source area, as well as by large pine forests and isolated open heather and sandy grassland .

A scenic feature of the Upper Senne is the significantly distinctive dune fields in the protected area , which are among the oldest inland dunes in northwest Germany and can also be found in the neighboring Moosheide nature reserves and the "dry valleys, box valleys and dunes of the upper Westerholter Bach". The up to twelve meter high dune tops were mainly created by wind drifts in the Glacial Vistula , where the Sennesand was thrown up due to a lack of protective vegetation cover and deposited again in another place. Younger dunes, however, were also created by human influences, such as forest clearing , the creation of fields and the pesting of heather areas.

There is also a seven-hectare former sand pit in the area , which was used economically until 1975 and has since been renatured. As a result of the only shallow sand excavations, a large number of small shallow waters and wet areas have emerged in this area.

Flora and fauna

flora

In the sandy areas of the dune field you can find sand and dwarf shrub heaths overgrown with heather , near-natural forest areas with pine, oak and birch trees , but also deserted pine poles . The surrounding vegetation of the Ölbach springs also contains stocks of bird cherry , buckthorn and bracken .

Various and sometimes rare species of peat moss can be found in the wet and nutrient-poor areas of the protected area as well as in the vicinity of the Ölbach springs, including the types of spit peat moss , deceptive peat moss , swamp peat moss and warty peat moss .

At the edge of the small water bodies in the area of the former sand pit, evidence of the round-leaved sundew was also successful .

fauna

The open sandy grassland and heather areas of the dune field are the habitat of numerous insect species specialized in this type of landscape; this include the ant lion , the anarta myrtilli or Dark Grünwidderchen as well as the field cricket , the spotted club cricket , the heath grasshoppers and misunderstood Grasshopper some adapted to the heath grasshopper species. The sand lizard is a reptile species in the protected area. A large number of amphibians can be found in the area of the former sand pit, including the natterjack toad .

The special species of avifauna in the protected area include the woodlark , which was found to be a breeding bird in the dune field.
