The deceptive peat moss ( Sphagnum fallax ), also called deceptive peat moss or Gekrümmtblättriges peat moss in the German-speaking area, is a peat moss belonging to the Cuspidata section and can be macroscopically differentiated from other sphagnes due to the long, pointed branch leaves, the small triangular pointed stem leaves and the greenish color.

Sphagnum fallax : branch leaf
Sphagnum fallax : cross section through a branch leaf

Identifying features

The medium-strong plants of the deceptive peat moss are usually greenish in color, yellow-brown tones also rarely appear. The branches are organized in clusters of four or five, usually 2 stick out from them.

The 2- to 4-layer epidermis of the trunk is relatively clearly separated from the greenish-yellow colored sclerodermis. The equilateral triangular stem leaves are pointed and about 1 mm in diameter. In addition, there is a very distinct hem. The stem-leaf hyalocytes are at most not very fibrous.

The elongated lanceolate, about 1 to 3 mm long branch leaves are often arranged in 5 rows on the branch. They gradually run into a point that appears sharp through the rolled-up edge of the leaf. When dry, the branch leaves are wavy. The cells on the inside of the leaf have some pores. The branch leaf hyalocytes are arched on the inside of the leaf while they are flat on the outside. The triangular chlorocytes are exposed on the outside. On the inside, they are usually enclosed by the hyalocytes.

There is a particular risk of confusion with narrow-leaved peat moss ( Sphagnum angustifolium ), which, however, has a reddish stem. Submerse forms of water can easily be confused with the sphagnum peat moss ( Sphagnum cuspidatum ) and can only be clearly distinguished under the microscope.

Occurrence

The circumpolar widespread deceptive peat moss is a frequent representative of acidic, mineral-rich, base-rich oligo- to mesotrophic bog sites in Europe. It is particularly typical in very wet areas. On swinging lawns it is often associated with Carex limosa and Scheuchzeria palustris . Characteristic accompanying Moose are the narrow-peat moss ( Sphagnum angustifolium ), which Fringed peat moss ( Sphagnum fimbriatum ), the Magellan peat moss ( Sphagnum magellanicum ), the marsh peat moss ( Sphagnum palustre ), the Shore peat moss ( Sphagnum riparium ) and also the Girgensohns peat moss ( Sphagnum girgensohnii ). Optimal pH values in the area should range between 2.5 and 6.
