Life

Klinggräff was the son of a West Prussian landowner. In 1826 he and his parents moved to a homestead near Agram in Croatia , where their father ran a farm with vineyards. He initially received his school education from his older sister. Later he was tutored by monks in Agram. He never went to a regular school. Klinggräff returned to Prussia in 1842. He studied at the Albertus University in Königsberg and received his doctorate in 1846. He then settled back in Croatia, where he carried out botanical studies along the Adriatic Sea and the islands in the Kvarner Bay . During this time he worked with other botanists, for example Mutius von Tommasini . In 1852 he bought the Wiszniewo estate near Lobau ( Province of Prussia ). In 1853 he married Mathilde von Vietinghoff. After the Wiszniewo estate was sold in 1862, he moved to Marienwerder and devoted himself entirely to botany. After the death of his wife, due to increasing blindness, he spent the last years of his life from 1890 with his sister-in-law at Gut Paleschken.
