Marie-Magdeleine is an oratorio (original generic name: "drame sacré") by Jules Massenet based on a French libretto by Louis Gallet , which in turn is based on the historical novel Vie de Jésus (1863) by Ernest Renan . The first occupation with the composition took place during Massenet's stay in Rome 1863–1864. The premiere took place on April 11, 1873 in the Théâtre de l'Odéon in Paris with Pauline Viardot in the lead role and conducted by Édouard Colonne . On February 9, 1903, the work was performed in a scenic version in Nice , and three years later at the Opéra-Comique in Paris.

action

The plot tells the last days of the life of Jesus of Nazareth from the point of view of his disciple Mary Magdalene . This is divided into three acts and four images:

Act I: The woman from Magdala at the well

Maria meets other women at the well who mock her as courtesans and sinners. Judas Iscariot steps out of the crowd and makes advances. Jesus appears and rebukes the crowd, pardons the sinner and invites himself into her house.

Act II: Jesus with the woman from Magdala

Jesus is expected as a guest in Mary's house. The servants and Martha of Bethany prepare the reception. Judas expresses his surprise to her that he wants to stop at a sinner's house. His betrayal is already mapped out in his behavior. Maria and Martha receive the guest with great respect. Judas leads the other apostles into Mary's house, they accuse Jesus of endangering them all with his behavior. Jesus calms them down and tells them to pray.

III. act

First picture: Golgotha

Jesus is already hanging on the cross and is mocked by the crowd, the scribes, priests, Pharisees and soldiers. Against the resistance of the soldiers, Mary approaches the cross and stands weeping at Jesus' feet as he dies.

Second picture: Jesus' tomb and the resurrection

The women go to the tomb of Jesus early in the morning and find him there alive. Jesus instructs Mary to proclaim his victory over death and faith in the risen Christ to all his disciples. Jesus ascends to heaven, all of Christianity and the angels sing his praises.
