Salzenteichs Heide is a nature reserve with a size of 75.49 hectares, the predominant part (approx. 40.68 hectares) of which lies in the area of the city of Borgholzhausen and the other part in the area of the city of Versmold . Both cities belong to the Gütersloh district , the area is managed with the number GT-025.

It was designated to preserve the east Münsterland park landscape with communities and sites of wild plant and animal species, especially rare and sometimes endangered plant communities in the moist grassland areas, as well as hedges, field trees, a section of stream and small bodies of water.

The name is historically derived from the original use of the area. As early as the middle of the 15th century, salt was extracted from brine springs here , by directing their water into flat ponds and evaporating there. The resulting brew was further evaporated in salt pans.

Today you can find many small bodies of water in the area, which emerged from clay pits that were used for the production of bricks from the 18th century .
