The Ravensberg - Barenberg nature reserve , with a size of 86.92 hectares, is predominantly in the area of ​​the city of Borgholzhausen and the smaller part (approx. 6.84 hectares) in the city of Halle (Westphalia) , both in the Gütersloh district . It is listed with the number GT-034 and is an FFH proposal area .

In particular, it was designated for the preservation of wild animal and plant species from lime beech forests , and in some cases also wild garlic beech forests . In the area of ​​the Ravensberg the forests are interspersed with hardwoods . The area shows a high diversity of species and structures, a distinctive age classification and a very well developed herbaceous layer . In addition, it is of cultural and historical importance, because Ravensberg Castle is part of the area.
