The Hessel is a 40 km long right tributary of the Ems in the areas of the North Rhine-Westphalian districts of Gütersloh and Warendorf .

The river rises northwest of Halle (Westf.) At the Große Egge , crosses the Hermannsweg , flows through the Hall districts of Hesseln and Hörste , then in the urban area of Versmold through Oesterweg and Peckeloh , further through the town of Sassenberg and on the southern edge of the Warendorfer Milte district before it flows into the Ems at Warendorf-Eine.

In the vicinity of Sassenberg on the Hessel are the Schachblumewiesen , one of the few areas in Germany where the strictly protected chess flower can still be found.
