The Romanesque basilica from the 12th century was converted into a Gothic hall church from 1320 to 1330 , the chancel was enlarged and the vaults painted. The Romanesque remains include u. a. the mighty west building with a few arched windows and slit openings, the two lion heads serving as door knockers, the transept and the apses adjoining it in the east . To the right of the main portal, the approach of the old Romanesque portal can still be seen in the brickwork. The clearly Gothic additions can be recognized by the heightened walls in the side aisles , the late Gothic crucifixion group made of Baumberger sandstone on the north-facing facade of the west building and on the newly built choir . The flat-roofed nave and the transept were converted into a vaulted hall space of four by three bays . Since the church as collegiate church was separated by a rood screen (remains are exhibited in a niche in the south wall in the nave) into a part reserved for the clergy and a part reserved for the people (also recognizable by the different design of the vault), the baptismal font was originally in the Western part of the church. It has now been set up in the north transept. The bronze lid of the baptismal font comes from the Clarholz sculptor Wilhelm Tophinke .

In 1955 the former parish church was completely renovated; Another interior renovation followed in 1981. The post-conciliar transformation of the choir by Heinrich Gerhard Bücker in 1986 partially reversed the perceived unsatisfactory meager sanctuary was a copy of the altarpiece of Bad Orb added. In 1992 the church roof was slated and the exterior facade of the church was renovated, and in 2003 the interior of the church was further renovated.
