August Claas

August Claas (born December 15, 1887 in Clarholz ; † April 12, 1982 in Harsewinkel ) was a German entrepreneur and co-founder of the Claas agricultural machinery company .

Life

August Claas was born as the second son of Franz Claas and Maria Prövestmann from Harsewinkel . From April 8, 1913, he ran his own factory in Clarholz- Heerde. On January 12, 1914, he and his brother Franz founded the Claas company. In 1921, August Claas registered a knotter for straw ties as the company's first patent , which became the basis for the company's development into a global company. His son Helmut Claas was born on July 16, 1926 .

Awards

On December 15, 1952 - his 65th birthday - entrepreneur August Claas was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and Harsewinkel's honorary citizenship . On March 8, 1955, he was promoted to Dr.-Ing. E. h. from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University Carolo Wilhelmina in Braunschweig .

In 1952 he was awarded the Cross of Merit (Steckkreuz) of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was awarded the Great Cross of Merit on December 14, 1957. At the same time the Neustraße in Harsewinkel was renamed August-Claas-Straße. On December 15, 1962, Minister of Agriculture Gustav Niermann presented the star of the Great Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on behalf of the Federal President. August Claas received the ring of honor of the city of Harsewinkel on December 17, 1977.

In 2008, Claas gave its name to the August Claas School in Harsewinkel.
