The Artland Dragons are a German basketball team from Quakenbrück in the Artland municipality . After withdrawing from the basketball Bundesliga in May 2015, the Quakenbrückers played in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB , and during the summer break of 2018 they received a license for the 2nd Bundesliga ProA .

history

The Artland-Arena , home of the Dragons

Basketball has a long history in the city of Quakenbrück. After basketball was played at the Artland-Gymnasium in Quakenbrück, a basketball department was established at QTSV in 1955 . In the 1970s, the first men's team achieved their first sporting successes. On the one hand, they were promoted to the 2nd basketball league and, on the other hand, they fought for a place in the second round of the DBB Cup. The 2nd Bundesliga could be held for three seasons. During this time, the league games had to be played in Essen / Oldenburg due to the lack of a regular hall .

Günter Kollmann , a former national basketball player (for the BBL clubs ATV Düsseldorf and VfL Osnabrück ) and an entrepreneur in the textile industry, has long been the main sponsor of the basketball Bundesliga team Artland Dragons and basketball in Quakenbrück and one of the main initiators of the enthusiasm for basketball in Quakenbrück .

In the 1977/79 season, the QTSV was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga and it went further down to the state league. From 1985 onwards, games were played in the Artland sports hall.

1990s

In the 1990s the Quakenbrückers fought their way back, rose to the 2nd regional league in 1994, the 1st regional league in 1995 and the 2nd Bundesliga in 1996.

From 1994 the American Chris Fleming was part of the squad and, as a top performer (and later coach), became one of the main characters in the success story that followed. In the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons, the QTSV reached the promotion round to the basketball league . In the 1998/99 season, exclamation marks were also set in the DBB-Pokal: The then fourth in the Bundesliga, Rhöndorfer TV, was defeated 65:63. In the round of 16, coach Toni Bevanda's team also met a first division club, namely DJK Würzburg with the young Dirk Nowitzki . With 33 points in the Artland sports hall, the future NBA star played a key role in the fact that the QTSV just missed another cup surprise and lost 74:77.

2000s

In 2000, Fleming took over as coach, with Ritz Ingram at his side, an experienced assistant. The 2000/01 season was marked by the duel between Quakenbrück and Rhöndorf, which was only decided on the last day of the game. The QTSV had to admit defeat to the Rhinelander with 97: 100 after extra time, Rhöndorf was champion (but passed the license on to Cologne), Quakenbrück finished the season in second. In the 2001/02 season they finished third, before the promotion succeeded in 2002/03: The QTSV marched undefeated to the championship title, the winning team included the American Michael-Hakim Jordan , the Austro-American Johnny McNeil , the Greek Konstantinos Stavropoulos , Arne Woltmann , Daniel Strauch and Ingo Freyer .

The team, which has meanwhile been renamed Artland Dragons, only missed the Bundesliga play-offs as a climber in the 2003/04 season, after the point round they were tied with Bayer Leverkusen. 2004/05 Chris Fleming led the dragons for the first time in the playoff quarter-finals. In 2005/06 they also succeeded, in 2006/07 they even reached the final series thanks to play-off victories over Berlin and Cologne and lost there with 1: 3 games against Bamberg. They also fought their way into the cup final, but also missed the longed-for title there.

In the 2007/08 season, the Quakenbrücker qualified as runner-up for the championship round, but were eliminated there in the quarter-finals against Bonn. But the cup was celebrated: A 74:60 final victory over Ludwigsburg brought the pot to Artland. Successful coach Fleming Quakenbrück left after the 2007/08 season, Thorsten Leibenath was his successor . In his two-year tenure, the playoff participation was narrowly missed twice.

2010s

Stefan Koch became Leibenath's successor in 2010. He led the Artländer in 2011 and 2012 to the semi-finals of the championship round, in 2013 they were eliminated in the quarter-finals. In addition, the Dragons, under Koch's direction, made it to the quarter-finals of the European club competition EuroChallenge in 2012 .

For the time being, the last Quakenbrücker coach in the first division was the American Tyron McCoy , who had previously been Koch's assistant. In the playoff quarter-finals in 2014, Bamberg and coach Chris Fleming were thrown out of the race, who had previously become champions four times in a row. Fleming was then released in Bamberg. In the semifinals, the dragons were eliminated against Berlin. The 2014/15 season ended in eleventh place in the table. On May 3, 2015, the club announced the cessation of professional games in the Bundesliga. “The disadvantage of location (too small hall, too few top sponsors) that Quakenbrück and the Dragons have compared to other basketball clubs (Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Bamberg, Bonn, Ulm) now has at the end of Bundesliga basketball in Artland led ”, was the official explanation.

After withdrawing from the first division, they started in the 2. Bundesliga ProB from the 2015/16 season . The former professional Dragan Dojčin was presented as the new head coach . On January 9, 2017, the Dragons parted ways with Dojčin during the current season. "The reason is the sporting development of the last few weeks, in which the necessary consistency was lacking," said the club's press release. Florian Hartenstein and Christian Greve formed the Dragons' new coaching team from then on. As in the previous year, the season ended after the elimination in the round of 16 of the championship round.

The dragons finished the points round of the 2017/18 season as the first in the table in the northern season of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB, but were eliminated in the quarterfinals (0-2 wins) against Iserlohn. From summer 2018, Hartenstein led the team after Greve's departure from Quakenbrück together with Tuna Isler and David Gomez as assistant coaches.

In June 2018, the Quakenbrückers took over the license of the Bundesliga relegated Rockets and thus advanced to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA . At the end of November 2019, the club separated from coach Hartenstein after the team had only won three out of the previous ten games and was in 14th place in the table.

Youth work

The youth department of Artland Dragons are the Young Dragons, each with an NBBL and JBBL team. There is also a cooperation with the parent club TSV Quakenbrück .

The JBBL team, led by Florian Hartenstein , became German champions for the first time in 2014.

Mascots and fans

The Dragons mascot is Tobi the Dragon and has been an integral part of the club and every home game since the club was founded.

The cheerleaders are called Die Flames and have been looked after by Theresa Hartenstein since 2010. In 2013 Die Flames were cheerleaders at the BBL ALL-Star-Day in Nuremberg.

The Artland Dragons have three official fan clubs , the "Fan Club Dragonfire", the "Dragon Front Quakenbrück" and "Forza Dragons Dinklage ".

The current venue, also known as the “roof cave” among fans, is the Artland Arena with a total capacity of 3,000 seats.

Furthermore, summaries of the games and other videos about the club have been available on the club's own YouTube channel since the 2015/2016 season.

media

The Dragons received attention from the regional Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung , but this has only been reluctantly the case nationwide since the play-off participation in 2007. The Osnabrück citizen broadcaster osradio 104.8 has been reporting irregularly about home games for years and is occasionally also represented at away games. By winning the cup in 2008, the team was able to further establish itself in the media interest. From the 2009/2010 season, live broadcasts were shown regularly on Sport1 . In addition, the Osnabrück monthly newspaper Insider has published a special page on regional professional basketball in every issue since 2010, on which the Artland Dragons played the largest thematic role. The 192-page magazine “Die Macht im Norden” from the Quakenbrück-based advertising agency “Artland Design” illuminates the twelve-year Bundesliga history of the Artland Dragons chronologically with lots of information.
