Promotion to 2nd Bundesliga ProA 2015

The White Wings Hanau are a German basketball team from the Hessian city of Hanau . From 2015 to 2019 the team played in Germany's second highest league, the 2nd Bundesliga ProA . The team is operated by White Wings Basketball GmbH, founded in 2013.

history

The parent club of the White Wings is the 1837 Hanau gymnastics community. In 2009, the TG Hanau rose as champions of the second regional league south-west-north in the first regional league (south-west relay).

From the regional league to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB

In 2011 the team, under the direction of coach Hans Beth, won the title in the first regional league and thus made it into the 2nd Bundesliga ProB . In March 2013, the club separated from coach Beth to give a new impetus before the start of the ProB relegation round. Assistant coach Helmut Wolf took over Beth's office until the end of the season and led the team to keep up.

In May 2013, White Wings Basketball GmbH was founded, which from then on operated the team. Harald Nickel became the first chairman of the supervisory board of the new GmbH, the office of managing director was placed in the hands of Sebastian Bartholomäus. Shortly afterwards, a new head coach, Ty Shaw , who had previously worked for TV Langen , was hired . Hanau finished the main round of the 2013/14 season as the first in the table of ProB Süd, but was eliminated in the subsequent final round in the round of 16 against the eighth-placed team in the north, VfL Bochum .

Four years in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA

The 2014/15 game year turned out to be difficult in the early stages. In late October 2014 coach Shaw was sacked after the first five games of the season had ended in defeats. Steven Clauss became his successor. Clauss led the Hanauer to the playoff quarter-finals, where they had to admit defeat Rostock. After the season, Clauss and the club could not agree on continuing their work, and they separated. Oldenburg and Wedel , who obtained the right to participate in the 2. Bundesliga ProA as champions and runners-up, did not apply for a license for the second highest German division. Hanau and Leipzig thus rose because "these were the top-ranked clubs with a valid license application for the ProA", as it was called by the league management.

The Hanau team went to the ProA as a trainer with the American Simon Cote . Cote was introduced in May 2015 as the successor to Steven Clauss. At the end of January 2016, the “White Wings Juniors Basketball” academy was launched to promote the promotion of young talent. Also in January 2016, a concept was presented which envisaged the construction of a boarding school, the construction of a multifunctional hall and promotion to the first division by 2022. In the 2017/18 season, the team reached the ProA playoffs for the first time, where they were eliminated in the first round against Crailsheim.

According to their own information, the White Wings were at a crossroads in November 2018 after a bad start to the season, not only in terms of sport, but also structurally and economically. A message from the club mentioned "internal conceptual differences of opinion". The economic situation had to be improved within a few weeks. On January 1, 2019, the Ebbecke Group took over the naming rights to the team, which had previously been named Hebeisen Küchen for four and a half game years. Sebastian Bartholomäus left his position as managing director in mid-February 2019. In the previous nine months, sports director Helmut Wolf (who later returned to the management level in a different position) and Jens Gottwald as a member of the club management had vacated their posts. Marcus Stützer became the new managing director. At the end of March 2019, the athletic descent from the ProA was clear.

Back in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB

On July 1, 2019 there was another change in the management of the operating company: Sebastian Lübeck, who was previously responsible for finance, licensing and advertising, became managing director. In November 2019 they separated from coach Cote, the team was in the middle of the table at that time. The reason for the step was that “the planned goals developed in different directions”. Assistant coach Michael Luprich then looked after the team in five games, and at the end of December 2019 Stephan Völkel was hired as the new head coach. Under Völkel, Hanau finished the main round of the 2019/20 season in third place in the southern season of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. The championship round was  not held because of the spread of Covid-19 . Völkel's term of office ended after the season, and the new coach was Kamil Piechucki from Poland in summer 2020 .
