Career

Clauss was born in New York, his parents had emigrated from Germany to the United States after the Second World War . After his family returned to Germany in the 1970s, he started playing basketball with MTV Kronberg . He initially studied law for three semesters and then completed a teaching degree before receiving his Trainer A license in 1983. In the mid-1980s he coached the Bayer Leverkusen women in the Bundesliga. In 1989 he completed his training at the trainer academy in Cologne . From 1994 Clauss was coach of the second division TK Hannover . He worked for the Bundesliga club Brandt Hagen and later joined the staff of the Bundesliga club Bamberg as an assistant coach .

From 2001 to 2008, Clauss was in charge of the Rhein-Main Basketball Academy before joining the Bundesliga team of the Skyliners Frankfurt in the 2007/08 season as assistant to head coach Murat Didin .

Between November 2008 and June 2010 he was the sports director of the German Basketball Federation . Clauss had already worked for the DBB before, including as co-trainer for the A2 national team. From August 2010 to July 2011 he was an assistant coach on the Bundesliga team EnBW Ludwigsburg .

In the 2013/14 season, he was head coach of the Eintracht Frankfurt / Skyliners Frankfurt syndicate in the youth basketball league.

At the end of October 2014, he succeeded the sacked American Ty Shaw as head coach of the TG Hanau in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB . Under Clauss' direction, Hanau came fourth in the main round in the 2014/15 season and reached the playoff quarter-finals. After the season, Clauss and the Hanauer Verein separated when they could not reach an agreement on further cooperation. In the summer of 2015, Clauss was an assistant coach on the German U20 national team.

In December 2015 he took over the position of head coach at the third division club Dresden Titans and got the team on the road to success within a short period of time: Clauss led Dresden to the playoff semifinals in the spring of 2016, as further contenders waived, the Titans rose to the second highest German division, the 2 Bundesliga ProA , on. Clauss' contract in Dresden was then extended by two years. Clauss was released on November 29, 2016 in Dresden. At the time of the split, the team was in last place in the 2nd Bundesliga Pro A with one win and twelve losses.

In June 2017 he became assistant coach of the Bundesliga club Basketball Löwen Braunschweig . Since head coach Frank Menz suffered a quadriceps tendon in November 2017, which resulted in an operation and temporarily unable to exercise his office, Clauss took over the post on an interim basis during this time. He remained assistant coach in Braunschweig until the end of the 2018/19 season and switched to Science City Jena in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA during the summer break of 2019 to also work as Frank Menz's assistant coach.
