The Duke Wolfenbüttel eV (full name: MTV Wolfenbüttel from 2012 Duke Basketball eV) was a German basketball club from Wolfenbüttel .

The club was founded in 2008 as the successor to the Wolfenbüttel Dukes . The association was dissolved on July 2, 2020 at an extraordinary general meeting.

As with the "Dukes", the club's name was based on the Guelph dynasty, who had long resided in the city . From the foundation in 2008, the dukes played in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB (with the exception of the 2014/15 season). In cooperation with the SG MTV / BG Wolfenbüttel, the dukes pursued a youth development concept in order to introduce as many local players as possible to the level of play in the full and semi-professional area.

The dukes' home games were mainly played in the Lindenhalle multifunctional hall in the Linden district of Wolfenbüttel , the second hall in the 2011/12 season was the double gym on Landeshuter Platz.

history

The Dukes' first coach in the 2008/09 season was the former Göttingen women's Bundesliga coach Mahmut Ataman . With Frank Theis , Henje Knopke , Solomon Sheard and Tobias Grauel, important actors from the previous season could also be retained. Surprisingly, the team became ProB runner-up in the season and thus managed to qualify for the ProA . However, the dukes could not meet the criteria necessary for a promotion in terms of the hall capacity and the amount of the budget, so that in the 2009/10 season under coach Nestor Katsagiorgis a new attempt was made in the ProB towards promotion. Due to the lack of sporting success and a perspective reorientation of the club, Katsagiorgis was separated in December and Benjamin Travnizek from Salzgitter was signed up , who also trained the NBBL team of SG Braunschweig. In the 2010/11 season, the dukes came under coach Alexander Biller , who was replaced by the American Carl Woodard in the course of the season , in dire relegation difficulties and were only able to win the class 2-1 in the play-downs against the junior Keep Skyliners Frankfurt . For the 2011/12 season, a collaboration with coach Benjamin Travnizek was agreed again. The season ended with the dukes' sporting descent from the ProB. However, due to some forced relegations within the ProA and ProB, Wolfenbüttel also received a license for the ProB for the 2012/2013 season.

For the 2012/2013 season, the two clubs SG MTV / BG Wolfenbüttel and Duke Wolfenbüttel merged in order to further consolidate the conditions within the region and to be more interesting for further sponsors. The new name was MTV Wolfenbüttel from 2012 Herzöge Basketball e. V registered. In terms of sport, the 2012/2013 season was again more successful for the dukes. After the regular season they were 7th in the table with 10 wins and 12 losses. The dukes thus qualified for the play-offs where they were defeated by TV Langen in the first round and were eliminated.

In November 2013, the club committed Predrag Lukic as a coach. Lukic ended the collaboration after a dispute with President Burkhard Junger in February 2014. After relegating to the ProB, the dukes were able to gain direct promotion as champions of the 1st Regionalliga Nord in the 2014/15 season. The most important player on the way to the title was player- coach Demetrius Ward : The American was named Player of the Year in the Regionalliga Nord by the internet service eurobasket.com . In addition, the city of Wolfenbüttel awarded the title “Team of the Year 2015”. In May 2015, the club entered into a cooperation with Bundesliga club Basketball Löwen Braunschweig and SG FT / MTV Braunschweig. As a result, young players from the Braunschweig Bundesliga squad could be given the right to play a second game (“double license”) for the dukes' team in order to gain game practice there.

At the beginning of December 2016, the dukes and coach Ralf Rehberger , who had looked after the team since the beginning of the 2015/16 season, separated. At the time of the split, the dukes were in penultimate place in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB (north group) and had suffered five defeats in a row. "Personal reasons" were named as the official reason for separation. Then Demetrius Ward took over the team management as player-coach as in the 2014/15 season and led the dukes over the relegation round to remain in the class.

In the summer of 2017, the American Steven Esterkamp was hired as the new head coach, who led the team to the quarter-finals of the championship round of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB in the 2017/18 season, where Wolfenbüttel was defeated by FC Schalke. In the 2018/19 season, the dukes were relegated from the ProB, after a 74:80 home defeat against the Dresden Titans in mid-March, this was certain. At the end of May 2019, the dukes announced that they would not compete in the 1st regional league in the 2019/2020 season, as, according to the club's management, as a result of the ProB relegation, there was "no sustainable and sustainable concept" for participation in the fourth-highest German division . Dukes President Burkhard Junge accused the Wolfenbüttel cooperation partner, the Bundesliga club Braunschweig, of not having recognized the importance of the Dukes remaining in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB, or recognized it too late. After the descent, you are “in front of a pile of broken glass,” said Junge, who resigned his presidency in the summer of 2019. The other board members Jörg Kohlhausen and Thorsten Bachmann also resigned after years of service, Frank Wöstmann became the new chairman, Matthias Möckel became his deputy and Dominik Kühn became another board member. The cooperation with the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig ended in summer 2019.

In cooperation with MTV / BG Wolfenbüttel, the team was sent into the race in the 2nd regional league in the 2019/20 season with the aim of achieving promotion to the 1st regional league. The right to start was transferred to MTV / BG Wolfenbüttel, but the name MTV Herzöge was retained. The coach was Thorsten Weinhold, who had previously looked after the men of the MTV / BG in the 2nd regional league and had become runner-up in 2018/19. With the two professional players Keith Hayes (USA) and Mirko Derek (Croatia) came reinforcement from outside. At the end of February 2020, the championship title in the 2nd regional league was certain after a 97:57 victory over SG Braunschweig .

At the beginning of July 2020, the members of the Dukes Wolfenbüttel eV voted with a large majority at an extraordinary general meeting to dissolve the association. According to the association, "complicated legal and legal difficulties in connection with sports sponsoring and the house rules of the MTV / BG Wolfenbüttel at the current and future venue in the gym on Landeshuter Platz" led to this step. Instead of the dukes, the previous cooperation association MTV Wolfenbüttel eV took over the operation of the men's team and outsourced it from the entire club. In the external presentation of the MTV team, the name "dukes" was retained.
