The Cuxhaven BasCats are a former German basketball club from Cuxhaven that played ProA in the second Bundesliga until 2015 .

history

The Cuxhaven BasCats emerged in 2004 from the 1st men of SV Rot-Weiss Cuxhaven . In the course of the promotion / participation in the competition of the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga Group North, the game operation was transferred to a corporation, Cuxhaven BasCats Marketing GmbH. The name changed to Cuxhaven BasCats . In the 2007/2008 season, he was promoted to the basketball league . However, the requirement of a hall capacity of at least 3,000 spectators, but also the financial requirements for the BBL, the first division, prevented promotion. In the 2009/2010 season, promotion to the basketball Bundesliga failed again due to the requirements of the BBL. In the spring of 2010, the Lower Saxony reached the final of the DBB Cup (played this season without a first division club) and hosted the final tournament. In the final they lost to Bayreuth 72:76. In February 2012 there was a separation from the long-time head coach Vilmantas Matkevičius , who had been represented by his assistant Krists Plendišķis since the beginning of the 2011/12 season for health reasons . Matkevičius had been a coach at Rot-Weiss or the BasCats since 2000 and led the team from the second regional league to the 2nd Bundesliga.

At the end of the 2014/2015 season, the team withdrew from the 2nd Bundesliga (ProA / ProB) after the Cuxhaven BasCats had not received a license for the coming season. Originally, at the end of March 2015, Cuxhaven was not known to have been relegated from the ProA. At the beginning of May, however, Cuxhaven received neither a license for the ProA nor for the ProB, according to its own information, the financial requirements for a license were too high. In addition, a few days later, a sports law decision was made in the ProA that changed the rating of a game in the 2014/2015 season. This decision meant that Cuxhaven slipped from 14th place to 15th and thus a relegation place. Originally the BasCats wanted to improve their license application for the ProB and find new sponsors, but these efforts were not successful. Therefore, they did not compete in the 2015/2016 season. On July 30, 2015, insolvency proceedings were initiated against the assets of Cuxhaven BasCats Marketing GmbH.

The game operation was subsequently transferred from the parent club to Rot-Weiss Cuxhaven Basketball .

Outfitter

The supplier of the Cuxhaven Bascats in the 2007/08 and 2008/09 playing years was JAKO . From the 2009/10 season the BasCats played with equipment from P4two, and then competed with SPALDING in 2010/11 and 2011/12. From the 2012/13 season until today, the BasCats will be equipped by OWAYO. The respective outfitter provides the team with the new jerseys as well as tracksuits, shooting shirts and other sports and fan articles. In addition, the youth teams of the Rot-Weiss Cuxhaven basketball department are equipped with the jerseys from the respective supplier.

Venue

The Cuxhaven round gymnasium served as the home venue for the BasCats . The hall, built in 1970, offers 1,531 seats for home games, including 256 VIP seats. For years there was discussion in Cuxhaven about renovating and enlarging the hall. Later the hall only met the requirements of the ProA with a few exceptions . The hall was also a main argument for not taking advantage of the athletic climbs in 2008 and 2010. The hall was also known as the BasCats Arena by the fans .
