The Cuxhaven Baskets (formerly Rot-Weiss Cuxhaven Basketball) are a German basketball team from Cuxhaven . In April 2017, the team won the championship title in the 1st Regionalliga Nord under the name Rot-Weiss and thus secured the right to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB .

prehistory

In the 2002/03 season, the men's team of SV Rot-Weiss Cuxhaven rose under coach Vilmantas Matkevičius in the 1st Regionalliga Nord. As a champion in 2004 he made it through to the 2nd basketball league . In the same year the Cuxhaven BasCats Marketing GmbH was founded, which took over the team's license and managed the game operations. Red and white became the Cuxhaven BasCats , which played in the second highest German division until 2015. As the parent club and “substructure” of the BasCats, Rot-Weiss expanded, among other things, the work with young people during this time and set up school working groups and youth camps.

founding

After the BasCats were relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga ProA in the 2014/15 season and were not given a license for the ProB for the following season, an interest group was formed in May 2015 that endeavored to do so under the name Rot-Weiss Cuxhaven to receive authorization to participate in the 1st regional league and to raise the necessary funds to finance the game. The initiator of this group was Moris Hadžija , who last held the position of coach at the BasCats and was also the coach of the first men's team from Rot-Weiss, which had finished the 2014/15 season in second place in the league. The people involved in the initiative explicitly distanced themselves from the BasCats: "We have and will not have anything to do with the Cuxhaven BasCats and Cuxhaven BasCats Marketing GmbH," said a statement in May 2015. In July 2015, it was clear that Rot -Weiss would compete in the 1st Regionalliga Nord in the 2015/16 season. In the course of efforts to obtain the right to play and to acquire the necessary funds, an operating company (Cux-Basketball UG) was founded, which Rot-Weiss handed over the operation of the team and which is economically independent from the parent club.

development

The 2015/16 season ended in second place in the 1. Regionalliga Nord. In July 2016, a cooperation with the Bundesliga club Eisbären Bremerhaven was agreed. Such a collaboration had already existed between the polar bears and the BasCats.

In the run-up to the 2016/17 season, several young players from other European countries joined the RW team as part of a training program of the European Union and in cooperation with the Eisbären Bremerhaven. Overall, coach Hadžija built on a team that was largely made up of foreign players. With that the Croat was successful: He led Rot-Weiss to win the championship title and thus to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. With a 73:56 home win over their closest rival VfL Stade on the last matchday (April 7, 2017), the Cuxhaven-based team secured the championship. The best scorer on the way to the title was the Croatian player Luka Petković (20.2 points on average). The expiring contract of master coach Hadžija was not extended after the end of the season in spring 2017. His successor in the coaching office was Markus Röwenstrunk, who previously looked after the BBG Herford team (first Regionalliga West).

In mid-August 2017, the team name was changed from Rot-Weiss Cuxhaven Basketball to Cuxhaven Baskets. At the beginning of February 2018, the team was expanded to include the experienced trainer Stephan Völkel , who took up the position of sports advisor. The points round of the 2017/18 season ended as the bottom of the table in the northern season of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. At the beginning of March 2018, Völkel took over the post of head coach, Röwenstrunk took on other tasks, including in the youth field. Shortly after the announcement of the change of coach, the four shareholders of the operating company Cux-Basketball UG announced their withdrawal regardless of the outcome of the season. "If no new responsible persons can be found immediately, an end to the higher-class basketball in Cuxhaven is to be expected", it said in the corresponding message. At the end of the 2017/18 season, Cuxhaven was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga ProB.

In mid-April 2018, Christoph Nicol was introduced as the new managing director of the operating company. American Darren Stackhouse took over as coach . In mid-November 2018, the team's withdrawal from the 1st regional league was announced. The operating company Cux-Basketball UG filed for insolvency. One day later, the announcement of the immediate withdrawal was canceled, those responsible announced that they wanted to keep the game operations in spite of the bankruptcy application and to attempt to raise the missing funds in the five-digit euro range. On December 6, 2018, the Cuxhaven Baskets announced that they had separated from trainer Stackhouse and his assistant Aaron Cook for economic reasons, and Nicol took on the role of trainer in addition to his duties as managing director. In December 2018, the founding of a new operating company in the form of a UG was announced, which would take over the game operations after the insolvency application of the Cux-Basketball UG. The new operating company called Cux-Basketball Spielbetriebs UG was entered in the commercial register on February 21, 2019. The 2018/19 game year ended with relegation from the 1st regional league. At the end of May 2019, further economic difficulties were reported.

After the Cux-Basketball Spielbetriebs UG was also bankrupt, a new UG (Cuxhaven Baskets UG) was founded in the run-up to the 2019/20 season, Ufuk Üre and Darron McDuffie became shareholders, Holger Junghans took over the office of managing director of the team for the the goal was given to play in the 2nd regional league for promotion. Dennis Tiedemann became the new coach. From November 2019, the team worked again with the Eisbären Bremerhaven to promote players and young people. When the 2019/20 season was canceled in spring 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the team was in second place in the 2nd Regionalliga Nord. Since the front runner Rostock II waived the right of ascent, this was awarded to Cuxhaven. In March 2020, Joel Moore, a former national and Bundesliga player, was hired for youth work.
