The EN Baskets Schwelm are a basketball team from Schwelm .

The greatest success in the club's history is promotion to the basketball league in 2004, back then as Schwelmer Baskets . After the Baskets had only reached last place in their first and only season in the top division of German basketball as Union Baskets Schwelm , a complete new beginning in the Regionnalliga began for the 2005/06 season. In the course of this new beginning, the club was re-established as BC Schwelmer Baskets 2006 eV . After the original name as Schwelmer Baskets was initially used, the team has been playing under its current name since the 2014/15 season. Since the beginning of the 2017/18 season, the baskets have been competing in the fourth-class 2nd basketball division ProB .

The operating company of the team is EN Baskets Schwelm GmbH . In addition to the men's team - together with BC Schwelmer Baskets 2006 eV - numerous female and male youth teams of different age groups are operated as a syndicate under the name RE Baskets Schwelm .

history

1977 to 1999 - the origin of basketball in Schwelm

Since it was founded in the summer of 1977, the basketball department of the gymnastics community “Zur Roten Erde” from 1848 Schwelm eV (TG RE Schwelm for short) has been the mainstay of basketball in Schwelm for over 30 years. After the 1989/90 season, the basketball players had the first opportunity to advance to the 2nd Bundesliga North as runner-up in the 1st Regional League. At that time, those responsible had to quickly recognize that this leap would have required intensive preparation in economic and organizational terms. Ultimately, the sporting success came faster than the development of the necessary environment. They renounced promotion and built a new team in the 2nd regional league.

1999 to 2005 - independence and BBL

The lessons of this setback were drawn, however, and as early as the mid-1990s, considerations were made about how to make the leap to the 2nd Bundesliga in the event of a renewed athletic qualification. Due to the complexity of a large club with various ball sports departments and around 2000 members, there were always questions - for example in terms of economic and tax law. In 1999, therefore, members of the basketball department of TG RE Schwelm founded their own club, BC Schwelmer Baskets eV, and formed a game community with TG Rote Erde Schwelm. Already in this season they were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga and from then on the 1st men's team played as Schwelmer Baskets in the 2nd Bundesliga North, while the rest of the amateur area operated under the name of TG RE Schwelm .

The Schwelmer Baskets became champions of the 2nd Bundesliga North under coach Torsten Daume in 2004 and were promoted to the basketball division . In the meantime a GmbH had been founded that held the license in its hands and under which the team started as Union Baskets Schwelm in the highest German basketball league . A difficult year in many respects followed and the athletic relegation from the basketball league was the logical consequence.

2005 to 2010 - re-establishment and promotion to ProB

Schwelm was about to start over in 2005 and a handful of enthusiasts embarked on the adventure of starting over in the regional league. At first it was important to prevent the slide into the abyss, but ambitious goals were quickly set again. After they wanted to consolidate themselves in the first season, the old structures were rebuilt as quickly as possible and a game community with the basketball department of TG RE Schwelm was established again to underline the sporting connection in amateur sports. As a precaution, however, the club was re-established as BC Schwelmer Baskets 2006 eV before the start of the syndicate . The syndicate initially started as SG Schwelmer Baskets in the area of the West German Basketball Association with several men's and youth teams as well as a women's team.

After two years under the sporting direction of Gvidonas Markevičius , a new sporting director came to Schwelme for the 2007/08 season with Raphael "Raffi" Wilder . The Dusseldorf rebuilt the squad and achieved a remarkable third place in his first season, which enabled a licensing process in the 2nd Bundesliga, and also won the WBV Cup, which was won for the second time since 1986.

Due to a formal error in this licensing process, the Schwelmer Baskets got themselves into dire straits, as they were left empty-handed after May 31, 2008. They had not fulfilled the conditions for the license and thus had not been included in the ProB, but at the same time the WBV took the view that the Schwelmer and their 1st men's team had left the WBV area when the registration deadline was 31 May. This was followed by legal disputes with the 2nd division and ProB. Finally, lawyers discovered loopholes in the rules that at least guaranteed participation in the WBV's gaming operations.

In the 2008/09 season, Schwelm dominated the regional league for a long time and looked like the sure winner for a long time, but then the phenomenon of "weakening at the finish line", which was already known from the previous season, set in and the district townspeople were still out of their rivals Intercept Leverkusen. Equal on points with the Bayer Giants Leverkusen , they finished second and became runner-up. The successful title defense in the WBV Cup against BG Dorsten was remarkable .

A year later, coach Raffi Wilder's team won the title with ease and with 50: 6 points secured the title of regional league champion 2009/2010 and promotion to the new, redesigned 2. Bundesliga ProB . After the 1st men's team had reached the regional league championship, the syndicate broke up for a short time in view of the upcoming promotion in the spring of 2010 and split into its two sponsoring clubs so that BC Schwelmer Baskets 2006 eV could successfully go through the licensing process for the 2nd Bundesliga ProB Nord. At the same time, those responsible founded a private company, EN Baskets Schwelm GmbH , and transferred the acquired license and implementation of the Bundesliga games to it.

With this, BC Schwelmer Baskets 2006 eV was again able to enter the amateur gaming community with TG Rote Erde Schwelm in summer 2010. This includes all teams outside of the Bundesliga, thus five men's, one women's and six youth teams in the 2016/17 season, and this time it operates under the playing community BC Schwelmer Baskets 2006 eV / Turngemeinde “Zur Roten Erde” from 1848 Schwelm eV but abbreviated under the name: RE Baskets Schwelm .

Since 2010: Current sporting developments

The team played in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB for five years. In the 2012/13 season , the Baskets even achieved promotion rights as the inferior finalists of the play-offs, but were unable to exercise this right due to insufficient infrastructure due to insufficient infrastructure due to a lack of application for a license for the ProA . In 2016, the third division ended with relegation to the regional league , but the Baskets regained promotion to the ProB in the 2016/17 season by winning the championship title in the first Regionalliga West. The master maker was trainer Falk Möller. As a climber, they made it into the championship round in the 2017/18 season , in which they failed in the round of 16 against the Rostock Seawolves (0-2 victories).

EN Baskets Schwelm Season 19/20

The 2019/20 season, which ended prematurely in mid-March 2020 due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus , was finished as second in the ProB north relay . The top performers of the Schwelmer team this season included the American Montrael Scott (17.5 points, 7.1 assists, 6.1 rebounds, 2.3 ball wins / game), the Dane David Knudsen (14 points / game) , the US-American Anell Alexis (13 points / game), Nikita Khartchenkov (11.3 points / game) and the Bulgarian Milen Zahariev (9.9 points / game).

Initially, the EN Baskets Schwelm played for years in the West Sports Hall , which only had 683 spectators at home games. These low spectator capacities meant that after their promotion to the basketball league in 2004 in the 2004/2005 season , the baskets were forced to play their home games in the Uni-Halle Wuppertal in order to meet the requirements of the BBL with regard to the required spectator seats (min . 3000 places). With the descent in 2005, however, the baskets moved back to the sports hall.

Since the beginning of 2016, the Baskets have been playing in the so-called Baskets Dome ( official name: Schwelm ArENa) . This is a newly built three-field hall at Milsper Straße 35, 58332 Schwelm, which was officially inaugurated on February 20, 2016 after 15 months of construction. A first game against Phoenix Hagen had already been played in the hall on February 9, 2016 . The Schwelm ArENa has a capacity of up to 1,500 seats. In addition, the sports facility offers a total of around 2,000 m² in the main hall and around 270 m² in the multi-purpose room, where people can practice not only top-class sport, but also popular sport.

In addition to the basketball players, volleyball and handball players also play championship games in the hall and train there. In addition, the clubs use the multi-purpose room for Zumba, yoga, coordination training and rehabilitation sports, for example. Other major events aside from sports, such as the 4th Schwelm Spring Fair and the State Conference of the Economic Juniors NRW Hagen / Ennepe-Ruhr, have already taken place in the hall.
