Rostock Seawolves ( proper spelling ROSTOCK SEAWOLVES , registered as the first basketball club Rostock eV ) is the name of a basketball team from Rostock in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The club is the basketball club with the most members in the new federal states and the seventh most participant ID cards nationwide (as of December 31, 2018).

history

1994–2014: founding years and advancement in sport

The EBC was founded in 1994 by members of the Sportgemeinschaft (SG) Fischkombinat (FiKo) Rostock and the HSG Uni Rostock. For the first time the team rose to the 1st regional league in 2007. Despite a successful start to the season, the direct relegation could not be prevented. Under coach Dirk Stenke, the Mecklenburgers managed to keep the class in Germany's highest amateur league for the first time in 2012 by reaching fifth place. In the summer of 2012, the name EBC Rostock Seawolves was invented, under which the team played from now on. In the same year, the Rostock-born Sebastian Wild, who had previously been head coach for the women of Lees-McRae College in the US state of North Carolina for six years , took over the coaching position and led the team around the pillars Sven Hellmann , Kwame Morgan and Jens Hakanowitz to third place in the table behind Stade and Magdeburg.

For the 2013/14 season, the goal was to confirm third place from the previous year. In the end there was the first place in the table and the associated promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB Nord. The mainstays of the championship team included the American Keith Radcliff, the Bulgarian Ivo Slavchev, the French Mahmoud Diakite and Sven Hellmann. One of the highlights of the season was the head-to-head race with promotion contender Itzehoe Eagles . This resulted in a rivalry that developed into a kind of derby due to the regional proximity.

2014–2018: ProB years

For the 2014/15 season , the team name was shortened to Rostock Seawolves . The squad was strengthened in some positions for the first year in the 2. Bundesliga ProB. Sebastian Wild was still the coach . Top performers such as the Canadian Yannick Anzuluni and the American Jarrell Crayton were placed alongside the veterans Jens Hakanowitz and Sven Hellmann . After the first half of the season, the Rostock Seawolves surprisingly took first place in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB Nord. In addition, Anzuluni was able to win the title of Player of the Month for November after an internet vote. The team went to the playoffs as the first of the points round of the ProB northern relay and reached the semi-finals, where they were eliminated against the eventual champions Oldenburg. In 2015, EBC club president André Jürgens reaffirmed the club's medium-term goal of playing in the basketball Bundesliga by 2020 .

In the following season, the Rostockers placed in the points round of the ProB-Nord in the top group and went into the championship round as third. However, the duel with the Dresden Titans was the end of the line in the first round. The US-American Matthew Hunter was the most accurate player in Rostock this season with an average of 18.7 points per mission. On March 1, 2016, the former team captain and former Danish national player Jens Hakanowitz was appointed sports director. At the beginning of October 2016, the club separated from head coach Sebastian Wild. At this point in the 2017/18 season , the team had two defeats and no victory. Wild's assistant Andreas Barthel took over the office. At the end of November 2016, those responsible in Rostock, who had announced promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA as a goal before the start of the season, corrected their target and, in view of the performance and results achieved up to this point (three wins, seven defeats), from then on formulated relegation as a target . On December 8, 2016, another coach change took place: Ralf Rehberger took over the post, Barthel became assistant coach again. Rostock moved into the ProB finals as eighth in the table, but lost there in the first round (0-2 games) against PS Karlsruhe .

The following season began with a completely new line-up: Nine newcomers joined the team, only three players from the previous season remained in the Rostock squad. In the run-up to the season, club president André Jürgens curbed expectations, which were fueled, among other things, by the goal of a league promotion by 2020, which was given in the past. The Ostsee-Zeitung reported: “The big dream of the Ostseestädter remains to jump into the BBL, which is the highest German division. However, Jürgens currently believes that it is unrealistic to make it there by 2020, even if the association's concept paper provides for it. 'The next step is the ProA, that will be difficult enough', said the 40-year-old on the sidelines of the season opening. “With 4059 spectators against Cuxhaven at the end of 2017, a new home game record was set in the Rostock city hall. The point round of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB Nord was finished third in the table. In the championship round, the Rostockers moved into the final series and thus achieved promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA . Against Elchingen, the team of coach Rehberger then won the first leg in their own hall (in front of a new record of 4550 in the sold-out town hall), but had to admit defeat away. In the addition of the results, Elchingen was ahead, Rostock finished the 2017/18 season as runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. In addition to the two Americans Brandon Lockhart, who was the best goal scorer in Rostock with a point average of 15.0, and Jordan Talbert also Bill Borekambi , Chris Frazier and Darian Cardenas Ruda were among the top performers of the runner-up team . Shortly after the end of the season, the club announced the separation from trainer Rehberger, as they had agreed on a collaboration with another trainer, namely the Serb Milan Škobalj , who was described as a preferred candidate by the sports director Jens Hakanowitz.

Since 2018: In the ProA

After the promotion to the second highest German division, the new coach Škobalj and sports director Hakanowitz rebuilt the team in large parts during the summer break of 2018. Jordan Talbert , Dennis Teucher , Darian Cardenas Ruda and Chris Frazier remained in the squad from the previous season . The team budget in the 2018/19 game year was put at "around two million euros" by the North German News . As a goal for the first year in the new league the league was given by the team management. The Rostock's premier game in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA was broadcast live by the TV channel Sport1 . Rostock finished fifth in the points round in its first second division season, and in the quarterfinals the team lost to Hamburg Towers with 1: 3 wins. Rostock had previously submitted a license application for the basketball Bundesliga on time, which was later withdrawn due to the lack of athletic qualifications. The best Rostock basket shooters in the ProA game year 2018/19 were Tony Hicks (14.4 points / game) and Yannick Anzuluni (14.1 points / game).

During the summer break of 2019, a former tennis hall in Bargeshagen was converted into a training facility for the Rostock professional team for a five-figure sum. Sports director Hakanowitz specified “reaching the play-offs” as the goal for the 2019/20 season. After the first game of 2020, an 82:72 home win against Schwenningen, coach Škobalj was dismissed because the “current situation was worrying and unsatisfactory,” the leadership said. The team was at this point in time with seven wins and ten defeats in twelfth place in the table. With the announcement of the agreement with the former national and master trainer Dirk Bauermann as his successor, the Mecklenburgers caused a bang. Rostock's sporting director Hakanowitz described Bauermann's commitment as "a unique opportunity" for the team. At his introduction, Bauermann emphasized that, in addition to his duties as a coach for the professional team, he also wanted to contribute to the further development of Rostock as a basketball location. Among other things, he accepted the offer because he saw the opportunity there to work long-term and to build something, even if the contract initially concluded until the end of the 2019/20 season does not yet reflect this. You have to "ensure that the people involved fit together personally and professionally," said Bauermann when he took up his post. The goal is "someday promotion to the first division," said Bauermann at his presentation in Rostock. The competition in this regard is fierce, but they want to see "that the dream, the vision, becomes reality," he emphasized. In mid-March 2020, the season ended prematurely because of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus , at the time the Rostockers were in twelfth place in the table with twelve wins and 15 defeats. At the beginning of April 2020, Bauermann's contract was extended.

Promotion to the Bundesliga was named as a medium-term goal in summer 2020, the team was promoted to the national team Rain Veideman (Estonia), Ronalds Zaķis (Latvia), Behnam Yakhchali (Iran) and players with Bundesliga experience in the run-up to the 2020/21 season ( Stefan Ilzhöfer , Brad Loesing , Chris Carter , Sid-Marlon Theis ) reinforced.

Venue

Since 2012, the home games of the Rostock Seawolves have taken place regularly in the OSPA-Arena in Tschaikowskistraße 45. The multifunctional hall is home to handball, volleyball and inline hockey, among other things. There are also regular concerts there. As a basketball venue, the hall holds around 900 spectators. When playing basketball, the arena is also referred to as the "Wolf Cave" with reference to the Seawolves.

Since the 2015/16 season, the home games have been taking place in the much larger Rostock city hall, as almost all the games were sold out in the previous season. However, the town hall had no basketball hoops, which is why a fundraising campaign was started in June 2015 to finance a mobile hoop system. The record number of spectators in the Rostock city hall has been 4059 spectators since the last home game of 2017 against the Cuxhaven Baskets . In the first final game against Elchingen in the same season, the Rostock Stadthalle was sold out for the first time in a game of Seawolves with 4550 visitors.

Fans

The JoggerBrigade was founded on November 23, 2010 and consisted of seven people in jogging pants. This is how her name can be explained. The fan group supports home games from the Orange Block and also travels to away games. In January 2015, the jogger brigade started various campaigns to promote fair and colorful sport against racism and xenophobia. Since November 21, 2015 there has been a second “official fan club” of ROSTOCK SEAWOLVES. The "Baltic Pirates" support the team in their home and especially in their away games.

Since the 2014/2015 season, the club has also supported a web-based fan radio . The wolf howls from fans for fans is present with its moderators at every Seawolves league game and reaches around 500 listeners per game.

Further departments in the association

More men's teams

As national champions in 2013, the 2nd men's team exercised their right of promotion and has been playing in the 2nd Regionalliga Nord since the 2013/14 season to enable talented youth players to make an easier jump to the Seawolves. Meanwhile, the 3rd team of the EBC, like the 4th and 5th teams, starts in the Oberliga Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is intended to serve as an entry point for youth players into the men's area before they are ready for national tasks.

Ladies

The EBC women's team won the runner-up title behind TSV Quakenbrück in its first season in the Regionalliga Nord in 2006/2007 . As a result, he was promoted to the 2nd Women's Basketball Bundesliga North . There, the team around coach Dirk Stenke and the players Gesa Köhn and Dianca Latrese Jones (USA) only managed to win their first victory at the end of the second half of the 2007/08 season against TuS Jena . This was followed by further point wins against the Tessari Baskets Hagen and the TuS Lichterfelde , which could not prevent the immediate relegation. As a result, the EBC always competed in the 2nd Regionalliga Nord Ost, where from 2010 to 2013 four championships were celebrated in a row. However, the club always waived its right to promotion. Due to numerous departures of high performers, the club withdrew from the 2nd regional league in summer 2013 and started in the Oberliga Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from then on.

youth

In the youth sector, the EBC Rostock provides at least one team in all age groups from U12 to U20 for playing in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Rostock has had its own primary school basketball league since the 2010/11 season, which was sponsored as a name sponsor by the local housing association “Schiffahrt-Hafen” from 2013 onwards. In the summer of 2011, the ambitious youth project experienced further impetus when Daniel Havlitschek and Roman Wolff, two youth coaches, were won. This project bore fruit. The EBC won the international IKW tournament in Berlin in 2013 with the U12 and coach Havlitschek. In 2017, the EBC offered a total of 24 basketball working groups in twelve schools. From the 2015/16 season, two new personalities, the A-license trainer Krists Plendišķis and the youth trainer Stanley Witt, were active as coordinators and trainers in the youth division of the EBC Rostock. Plendišķis left the club in 2017, in the same year the staff was expanded to include full-time coaches Malte Haedecke, Tom Schmidt (both in the children's and youth sector) and Nicolai Coputerco (2nd men's team).

In the 2016/17 season, an EBC team competed in the U16 Bundesliga JBBL for the first time. At the end of May 2018, the Rostock U18 team won the German Youth Cup.

In the summer of 2018, the Rostock U19 team failed to make the leap into the junior basketball league (NBBL) in the elimination round , but shortly afterwards received from the league retrospectively a participation authorization for the 2018/19 game year, which means the Hanseatic League for the first time in the U19 -Bundesliga were represented.

In January 2019, Nicolas Buchholz , Theo Brackmann and Filip Škobalj , three youth players from Rostock, took part as guest players in the EuroLeague's U18 youth tournament for the first time. Škobalj and Buchholz played during the tournament in Munich on loan for the FC Bayern Munich , brackish man represented the colors of Ratiopharm Ulm .
