The 2019/20 season was the thirteenth season of the German ProA basketball division . The ProA is the first division of the hierarchically structured 2nd basketball league . The season's point round began on September 20, 2019, and the season ended prematurely on March 17, 2020 due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus .
Game mode
17 teams took part in the league and played a main round as a round-robin tournament in the "everyone against everyone" mode with a return game. The eight best-placed teams in the final table should have played out two finalists in up to five matches in the championship round ("playoffs"), who would have acquired the right to participate in the basketball league , which they would have acquired when a BBL license was granted economic and infrastructural criteria for promotion to the Bundesliga. The finalists should also have played the champions of this division in the two legs.
Season Notes
- As a relegated from the basketball Bundesliga , Science City Jena returned to the ProA after three years in the Bundesliga. For the Eisbären Bremerhaven it was the first descent into the ProA in their club history.
- Newcomers from the ProB were ProB champions Bayer Giants Leverkusen . The runner-up UBC Münster waived his right of promotion, instead the Wiha Panthers Schwenningen rose.
- As relegated from the previous season, the Baunach Young Pikes and the Hebeisen White Wings Hanau had to enter the ProB.
- The runner-up of the previous season, the Nürnberg Falcons , was denied the license for the Bundesliga, which meant that only the Hamburg Towers were allowed to climb. For this reason the season took place with 17 instead of the regular 16 teams.
- According to the ProA game rules, originally three clubs (15th to 17th place) should have been relegated after the end of the season. However, since only one club is relegated from the Bundesliga, it was decided in February 2020 that only the last two teams should be relegated. Thus, the target strength of 16 teams should be achieved again in the 2020/21 season .
- At the beginning of January 2020, the Rostock Seawolves caused a personal bang with the engagement of the former national and master trainer Dirk Bauermanns . With the coach Jenas Frank Menz , two former national coaches were employed in the league.
- Due to a "significant violation of conditions" according to the league management, Nuremberg was deducted four points in January 2020.
- On March 11, 2020, the league management announced that it would interrupt match operations due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus . On March 17, the season ended early for the same reason. The status at this point in time was considered to be the final table. Chemnitz as first place at this point and Bremerhaven as second received the right to promotion to the basketball league. Due to the termination of the season, it was decided that no teams would have to relegate to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB.
