Before the start of the season, the league was divided into two seasons (north and south), each with twelve teams. The six best teams in the final table of the relays acquired the right to participate in a three-tier relegation round with the six worst teams in the 1997/98 basketball Bundesliga for promotion to the basketball Bundesliga (BBL). The six worst teams each took part in a relegation round. Two teams descended into the assigned regional leagues regularly per season. The results of the main round were taken into the relegation rounds.

Season Notes

  • In the group south there was a first division relegation with the BG Ludwigsburg , while the USC Freiburg was promoted.
  • Newcomers from the regional leagues were in the group north ETB SW Essen and SSV Einheit Weißenfels and in the group south the BG Karlsruhe , which returned to the league after a year of abstinence
  • Before the season, Bayern Munich renounced a second division return as a promoted team. Newcomer TSV Haunstetten withdrew from the game before the start of the season, so that the group south played with eleven teams.
  • Champions of the 2nd basketball league were at the end of the season: BC Oldenburg-Westerstede (North) and DJK s.Oliver Würzburg (South), the latter with Dirk Nowitzki as the top scorer achieved promotion to the BBL in the relegation round.
