The 2013/14 season is the seventh season of the German ProB basketball division . The ProB is the second season of the hierarchically structured 2. Basketball Bundesliga (2. BBL). The main round began on September 28, 2013 and ended on March 9, 2014. The play-offs began on March 15, 2014.

mode

Twelve teams each in two groups, north and south, took part in this division's play. The regular season was played as a round- robin tournament in the mode everyone against everyone ( English "Round Robin" ) with a return game in the respective regional group. The eight best-placed teams at the end of this main round played the two finalists in the play-offs in the "Best-of-Three" mode , both of whom acquired the right to participate in the ProA for the following season and played off the champions of this division. As an innovation for this season, the four worst teams at the end of the main round instead of in so-called play-downs while maintaining the main round results, played another round-robin tournament with a round trip within the regional groups, with the two each on the two teams at the bottom of the table were relegated to the regional leagues.

conditions

Among other things, the participating teams had to:

  • play in a hall that had 500 seats,
  • have six players in the squad who were in possession of German citizenship .

During a game, three German players per team had to be used on the field; the German players were to be marked with a German flag on the jerseys.

A maximum of 18 players per season and team could be used. At least nine of them had to be German citizens. Of the maximum of twelve players that could be used per game, at least six had to be German. There were double licenses for players in the U24 age group, who could be used at the same time in the BBL , as well as for U22 players from the regional leagues (and below). Players with a double license were not among the 18 maximum players who could be used if they had German citizenship, but they were part of the national quota.

Season Notes

  • The university giants Leipzig returned from the ProA 2012/13 as a sporting relegation after a year in the group south. The Kirchheim Knights remained in the ProA as the second athletic relegated team after the Schwelmer Baskets, as a sporty ascendant, had not submitted a license application for the ProA due to a lack of infrastructure.
  • After the ProA league club Giants Düsseldorf's license was withdrawn , the runner-up in the Regionalliga Nord, BBC Magdeburg, received a “ wild card ” for the ProA. There was no replacement from the ProB.
  • The VfL AstroStars Bochum and VfL Stade were promoted from the regional leagues in the North Group , while the BBC Magdeburg, who had not been promoted in sports, got a license for the ProA. BIS Baskets Speyer , a ProB league team until 2012, and 1. FC 1911 Baunach, most recently an independent second division team in 1994 , returned to the South Group .
  • The only triple-double of the main round was achieved by John B. Falkner Jr. on November 30, 2013 for the Weissenhorn Youngstars with 17 points, 14 rebounds and ten assists in the 99:75 away win against the Giants Nördlingen.

The final will be played in the two-legged mode, in which the better-placed team had home rights after the main round in the second leg, so that the worse-placed team had to play at home first in the first leg. The BAWE Oldenburger TB became the master of the ProB due to the better basket ratio. Both final opponents have thereby acquired the right to participate in the ProA 2014/15 in a sporting way, subject to economic licensing .
