The Hertener Löwen are a basketball club from Herten .

The club was founded in 1998 as the successor to the former Bundesliga club TuS Herten (later: Ruhr Devils ), who became number one in the area under Hubert Beck (former coach and player of the basketball team from Schalke 04). As a pure basketball club, both popular and top-class sport in the areas of men's, women's and youth basketball should be promoted.

The venue for the first men's team is the sports hall of the Rosa Parks Comprehensive School in Herten on Fritz-Erler-Str. 2, which has 1,200 seats (600 seats and 600 standing). The second venue (including for the youth teams) is the Ludgerushalle Herten at Feldstrasse 51, which has around 600 seats.

history

Under coach Igor Krizanovic , he won the championship in the 1st Regionalliga West in 2005 and was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga .

The team, which reached fifth place in the 2005/2006 season, changed dramatically. Many regular players could no longer be held. With Patrick Flomo ( Telekom Baskets Bonn ), Sebastian Schröter ( Phoenix Hagen ), Joe Tesfaldet ( Mitteldeutscher Basketball Club ) and Terren Harbut , the Lions lost four people from the starting lineup. The talents Kevin Lehmann and Tobias Schiebold were also no longer there. Newcomers were the two Americans Kevin Netter (Ohio Aviators) and Ed Williams ( Düsseldorf Magics ) as well as the young talents Jasper Knoch ( EWE Baskets Oldenburg ), Maximilian Rowoldt (ETB SW Essen) and Nino Janoschek (BG Dorsten). In the same year the U14 of the Löwen became West German champions.

On August 13, 2006, the club also separated from Marko Radulovic . Although the Guard had already signed a contract with Herten, he pushed for the dissolution. The reason for this was an unexpected offer from Kaiserslautern. Only a few days later, Gilad Hirsch, a new guard, was hired. However, after differences between Hirsch and the team, the Israeli's contract was terminated on December 15, 2006. He signed a new contract with the Dragons Rhöndorf at the beginning of the second half of the season. The club also parted ways with Kevin Netter just a few days later. In order to fill these holes, the experienced construction player Sova Taletovic ( Dimplex Falke Nürnberg ) and the center Jan-Christian Both ( BG 74 Göttingen ) were hired during the winter break .

At the end of the 2006/07 season there was a big upheaval for the Lions. Coach Krizanovic left. The incumbent board did not run again, and so a new board was found around President Ludger Triffterer. Only Christian Bruns (later Citybasket Recklinghausen) and Jan-Christian Both remained from the squad of the previous season, so the Löwen fans had to get used to numerous new faces. The new coach was Anton Mirolybov from Finland . The newly formed squad showed that they could play just as successfully as in recent years. At the beginning of February 2008, a shock not only hit the board and team, but also fans and friends of basketball. The two lions, Kasey Ulin and Chris Bond, tested positive for cocaine , which was a reason for the board to fire them both without notice. Both were then banned worldwide for two years. Just a few days later, however, the lions introduced the player of the year in Denmark, the American Dustin Pfeifer, as a new addition. At the end of the 2007/2008 season, the Lions were able to claim sixth place in the table despite the turbulent season.

The changes in the squad before the 2008/2009 season were less serious than in the previous season. However, with Thomas Dreesen, Dustin Pfeiffer and Torvoris Baker three regular players left the club. Pfeiffer had already signed a contract in Herten, but dissolved it in favor of the Chemnitz Niners . Torvoris Baker also moved to this club, Thomas Dreesen played in the 2008/2009 season for ProA league team Phoenix Hagen . Alexander Rosenthal first signed a contract with the regional league club Lok Bernau, but dissolved it before the start of the season and returned to the Hertener Löwen. Philipp Stachula , Dario Fiorentino, Tim Schulze-Buxloh and Franjo Lukenda had already extended their engagement before the end of the 2007/2008 season. Schulze-Buxloh had to do without playing basketball for a year due to an injury, so that he was still not available for this season. Jasper Knoch, who wore the lions jersey again after a one-year break, and Joleik Schaffrath, Raphael Bals, Oliver Hahn, André Spalke and the Americans Gary Johnson and Kendall Chones completed the squad, which also included youth players Kevin Nolte and Christoph Schmüdderich were included. There were no changes in the board, since Vice President Jürgen Philipp and sports manager Dirk Ewald were re-elected at the general meeting in April 2008 (the other board positions were only voted on again in spring 2009). The 2009/2010 season was a turning point for the Herten team: three top performers (Gary Johnson, Kendall Chones and Dario Florentino) left the Ruhr area basketball players.

In the 2010/2011 season the Hertener Club started again in the ProB, because despite the athletic qualification for the higher-class ProA, the license required for participation in this division was refused by the responsible committee of the league. For the 2010/2011 season, the structure of the 2nd basketball league was changed again. The 2nd league ProB was divided into a north and a south group, which initially determined the placement of the twelve participating teams in "normal" league operations with round-trip rounds. The Hertener Löwen were divided into the northern relay and took second place in this playgroup at the end of the main round. According to the new league structure, the main round was followed by the final round, in which the best eight teams from north and south play championship and promotion in the knockout system ("play-offs"), while the remaining four teams from each season play KO system against relegation ("Play-Downs"). The Herten had therefore qualified for the play-offs. The last sixteen against TSV Tröster Breitengüßbach won the Lions, but they were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Nuremberg BC . In the 2011/2012 season, the "Löwen" joined Dorsten and Wulfen as the third club from the Recklinghausen district in the 2nd ProB basketball division. The 2011/2012 season could finish the Lions again in second place in the table and made it in the play-offs to the semi-finals. There they were subject to the BiG Rockets Gotha . After the last game of the season, coach Boris Kaminski announced his departure from the Lions. He switched to the Dragons Rhöndorf , who also played in the ProB , as the new head coach and sporting director . Dirk Altenbeck was presented as his successor. He was previously the sporting director of the Giants Düsseldorf club and looked after the 2nd team in the regional league.

In 2003 a cheerleading department was founded in association with the Magic Paws , which now consists of three teams and is one of the top teams in North Rhine-Westphalia in the "Cheerdance" category.

With all basketball and cheerleading departments, the club currently has around 360 members.

The squad in the 2012/2013 season consisted of the following players: Adrian Bowie, Tim Schönborn , Niklas Leschowski, Max Wittenberg, Johannes Grote, Farid Sadek, Yannick Opitz, Christoph Hackenesch , Julius Dücker, Mark Depta, Brandon Larrieu, William Taylor. Under the leadership of Dirk Altenbeck it was possible to achieve third place in the table in ProB Nord. In the all-German play-off round, the Licher BasketBears made it to the quarter-finals, where they then failed against TV 1862 Langen .

In the 2015/16 season, the Lions had to accept relegation from the ProB. The main round closed the team under the direction of head coach Majdi Shaladi after seven wins and 15 defeats from penultimate. Shortly before the end of the main round, Shaladi was relieved of his office and his previous assistant coach Cedric Hüsken took over the management of the team. In the relegation round Herten remained without a win and rose as bottom of the table in the 1st Regionalliga West. Despite the lack of success for the team, the American DeAndre Lansdowne had a strong season in Hertener Diensten and was named ProB Player of the Year by the internet service eurobasket.com . Lansdowne left Herten after the 2015/16 season and moved to the second division Hamburg Towers .

In the 1st Regionalliga West, the Lions under coach Hüsken belonged to the top group in the following years after a transition year, which ended in ninth place in the table: The 2017/18 season ended in third, 2018/19 in second.
