Ben-Johannes Spöler (born April 14, 1988 in Coesfeld ) is a German basketball player . The former youth selection player was trained together with his twin brother Tom Spöler in the youth teams of the German record champions Bayer Giants Leverkusen and initially played until 2010 with a double license in the first division team of Giants Düsseldorf and later one season with the first division Artland Dragons. In 2013 he went back to his home club in Leverkusen after their return to the second highest division ProA , in which Spöler had already been active for the Paderborn Baskets for two years.

Career

Ben Spöler and his twin brother took his first steps in club basketball in Borken , before they played successfully in the Hertener Löwen youth teams. From there they were won for the youth program of the German record champions Bayer Giants Leverkusen. As a result, they were trained with the school team of the Landrat-Lucas-Gymnasium from Opladen under teacher and trainer John Ecker 2005 national tournament winners among youth for the Olympics . At the U18 European Championship, Ben reached 13th place with the German youth team and was relegated to Division A of the 16 best teams. As a result, however, only his twin brother was represented in German junior teams instead of Ben. In 2007, both of them moved into the squad of the Bayer Giants' first division team with a double license , for which they had their first brief appearances in the 2007/08 basketball division .

In 2008, the first division license from Leverkusen was sold to Düsseldorf , so that the professional Giants team under coach Achim Kuczmann moved almost completely down the Rhine. Ben Spöler saw less time than his twin brother, similar to the consideration for German national teams in the top men's division. As the Düsseldorf Giants, however, the team slipped out of the play-off places and at the end of the 2009/10 basketball Bundesliga even only occupied one relegation place. The league was ensured by acquiring a wildcard , but there was a real break with Leverkusen's previous history in 2010 when the Giants' coach and management changed completely. The Spöler twins also separated and Ben joined the first division relegated from Paderborn , where he played with the twin brothers Lars and Ole Wendt . After a seventh place in the ProA 2010/11 , the Paderborn Baskets reached the newly established play-offs for promotion in the ProA 2011/12 on the fifth main round place, whereby they were a placement better than the now actually relegated Düsseldorf Giants. After being eliminated in the first play-off round, Spöler got a squad place for the basketball Bundesliga 2012/13 with the first division club Dragons from the Artland community under coach Stefan Koch , although his playing shares and playing times at the second division team in Paderborn tended to decrease in his second season were. After finishing sixth in the main round, the Dragons, who competed with an ambitious squad, were eliminated in the first play-off round for the German championship.

Ben Spöler had only made 13 short appearances with the Dragons in the first division with an average time of less than five minutes per game, so that he then returned to the Bayer Giants Leverkusen, who, under coach Kuczmann, returned to the second highest division in 2013 ProA had reached, while the Düsseldorf Giants had to stop their gaming operations. Although Ben Spöler only had nine appearances in the ProA 2013/14 due to an injury , the climber was able to stay up and confirmed in the ProA 2014/15 that followed.
