Ahmad Smith (born September 1, 1984 ) is an American basketball player . Smith became a professional after studying in his home country and moved to Germany in early 2008, where he initially played in a lower class. In the ProB 2009/10 he was elected Player of the Year and was then signed by clubs from the second-rate ProA . In the ProA 2011/12 he was runner-up with the Kirchheim Knights.

Career

Smith grew up in Alexandria (Virginia) and after attending the "Bishop O'Connell High School" in 2002, he moved to the private, Catholic St. Bonaventure University in New York State . There he played for the Bonnies university team in the Atlantic 10 Conference of NCAA Division I. He performed well there and was appointed to the “third team” in the third year and to the “second team” of the conference in the fourth year. However, it was not enough for the Bonnies to qualify for the national finals or for Smith to be recommended as a professional in the highest-endowed professional league, the National Basketball Association (NBA).

After completing his college career, Smith moved abroad in 2006 because he was without a prospect of a contract in the NBA. He completed his first season in Ireland , where he led the Mardyke UCC Demons from Cork to the national cup final and the national championship final. For the following season he moved from Europe to South America and began the season in Uruguay . Here he could not find his way around and left the country a short time later for home.

After parting with his previous management, he moved again to Europe at the end of the 2007/08 season. In the second regional league, which is now fifth after the introduction of the hierarchical 2nd basketball league, he was able to play six more games for the second team of SV Derne 49 from Dortmund and thus recommend himself for higher-class assignments. Reviernachbar BSV Wulfen in the 1st regional league of the WBV signed the development player for the following season 2008/09.

For the 2009/10 season Smith then moved again in the region and again a class higher from Dorsten to Herten to the local ProB league club Löwen . With the lions he was able to defend second place in the table at the end of the season and thus his right to promotion to the ProA. On average, Smith was able to distribute just under 18 points, just under nine rebounds and a good seven assists in 29 games this season , scoring nine so-called double doubles , which he was able to refine into triple doubles three times . While Smith was also named ProB Player of the Year 2010 because of his excellent personal statistics and the team success of the Herten team, the Lions did not receive the necessary license for promotion to the ProA. Instead, the third-placed Würzburg Baskets rose to the higher class, which Smith signed for the ProA 2010/11 . However, Smith claimed special leave at the beginning of the season for private reasons, so the Würzburg Baskets finally terminated the contract.

After the contract was terminated, Smith returned to Germany in 2010 and went back to SVD 49 in the fourth class first regional league. Here, however, he clearly suffered from the disappointment about the missed chance in the ProA and after disappointing performances he was released from Dortmund in mid-November 2010. In January 2011, the Franconian competitor of the Würzburg team signed him with the Nuremberg Basketball Club for the rest of the season. In eight games Smith managed again a triple-double. In the following season 2011/12 Smith got an engagement in the ProA. The Knights from Kirchheim unter Teck in Württemberg signed Smith. The Knights achieved their best placement so far in the second highest division and were able to confirm their second place after the regular season by reaching the finals in the play-offs , where they only narrowly inferior to the first division returner Mitteldeutscher BC in the addition of the two finals with two basket points were. Smith shines in the first final game with 18 assists and 12 rebounds and had very solid statistics in the higher division for the runner-up over the season with a good ten points and six assists and rebounds per game. Since the Knights had no prospect of a license for the first basketball league , the Kirchheimers were denied promotion to the top German division despite reaching the finals.

For the following season ProA 2012/13 Smith then moved to ProA promoted Oettinger Rockets from Gotha . On December 12, the club and Ahmad Smith separated. The parties have agreed not to disclose the reasons for the termination of the contract. At the end of December, Smith then signed a contract with the Nuremberg Basketball Club for the rest of the 2012/2013 season. He already played for Nuremberg in 2011 and should now help to stabilize the club in the ProA .

In July 2014 Smith was signed by the Bundesliga relegated Rasta Vechta in the ProA. However, after four months he left Vechta again.
