Diante Levante Watkins (born July 5, 1990 in Chicago ) is an American basketball player who has been under contract with the Turkish second division club Gemlik Basketbol since 2019.

career

Watkins grew up on 63rd Street in south Chicago  and played basketball as a teenager at Hubbard High School. After graduating in 2008, he moved to Richard J. Daley College, also in Chicago, a two-year college. There he drew attention to himself, especially in the 2009/10 season as a playmaker with an enormous urge to basket, and scored 26.5 points per encounter. That earned him an "All America" award from the NJCAA ( National Junior College Athletic Association ). Since November 2015 Watkins' shirt number 3 is no longer awarded in the basketball team of Daley College in order to honor his achievements.

According to Watkins, after two years at Daley College, there was an opportunity to move to NCAA Division 1, as the teams from the University of Missouri , Bradley University and Chicago State University showed interest in him. However, these options were thwarted for academic reasons and he continued his college career at Robert Morris University in the NAIA . The team from the college from Chicago led Watkins in its two seasons as the best scorer and assists. In 2011 he led the team to the quarter-finals of the national NAIA playoffs. In his final year 2011/12 he was in the NAIA in the categories "points per game" (24.4) and "templates per game" (7.4) in third place. In both seasons he was voted one of the top ten NAIA players (“All-America First Team”), and in 2011/12 he was named the best player of the season by the specialist magazines “Basketball Times” and “Sporting News”.

After the end of his university career, Watkins played briefly for the Chicago Redline team in the US IBA league in 2012/13. For the 2013/14 season he moved to the German 2nd Bundesliga ProB for SC Rist Wedel . In his first year abroad he was mostly in the shadow of the experienced Australian Lee Jeka , but was still the best scorer of the Wedel team, with whom he reached the semi-finals of the ProB. In the 2014/15 season he became the head of the team that moved into the league's final series, but was defeated by Oldenburg. Watkins was then voted the best player of the ProB season in a vote by the 2nd Bundesliga; he was also awarded this award by the specialist organ eurobasket.com . During the season Watkins had averages of 21.3 points, 6.8 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game.

In July 2015, Bayer Leverkusen announced ProA Watkins' commitment from the 2nd Bundesliga , but the agreement was terminated the following month after the American suffered a meniscus injury in his home country that required an operation. Following recovery, Watkins joined the Chicago Blues team in his hometown, winning with her the championship title of the Midwest Professional Basketball Association (MPBA). He was named the best player in the playoffs.

In May 2016, Watkins took part in a four-nation tournament in China as a member of a US selection. There he met a German selection that was supervised by Ralph Junge . Junge signed him in July 2016 for his club team, the Nürnberg Falcons BC from the ProA. Watkins was the best thrower (17.1 points per game), best preparer (4.7 assists per game) and best ball conqueror (1.9 ball wins per game) of the Franks in the 2016/17 season.

For the 2017/18 season he moved to the French third division team Stade Olympique Maritime Boulonnais, where he recorded averages of 15.8 points, 5.9 basket assists, 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 ball wins per match in 34 appearances. At the end of July 2018, Watkins was signed by the French third division promoted Union Tours. Watkins wore the Tours' colors in 21 league games, scored 15.7 points and gave 4.7 basket assists per game. Both were team highs.

In mid-August 2019 Watkins was signed by the Turkish second division club Gemlik Basketbol.
