Ralph Junge (born May 20, 1969 ) is a German basketball coach . He is the sporting director and managing director of the Nürnberg Falcon BC . In addition, during his time at the Urspring School he supported several national and Bundesliga players such as Lucca Staiger , Nicolai Simon and Malik Müller .

Career

Junge was a student at the Urspring School . He played basketball for the DJK Sportbund München-Ost , one of his teammates in his youth was the future national player Sascha Hupmann . Junge later played with the DJK in the 2nd Bundesliga and was also part of the training team at the University of Evansville ( Indiana ) for a year, but ended his playing career at the age of 22 due to injury (broken kneecap). During his student days he became a trainer and later worked for the Baden-Württemberg basketball association, among others.

In 1998, Junge founded the basketball academy at the Urspring School in Schelklingen . He took over the sporting management. A game community was formed between TSG Ehingen and the Urspring School, which operated under different names (currently Team Ehingen Urspring ) and looked after the youngsters as head coach. He led the team in 2003 to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga and in 2011 to the championship title in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB (at the same time promotion to the ProA ). In the 2013/14 season he was named ProA trainer of the year. Under his aegis as sporting director, he also won a total of six German youth championship titles in the U19 and U16 age groups. In addition, there were further championships in other youth age groups (U18 in 2005), in the German Youth Cup U18 (2007 and 2009), in the national competition " Youth trained for the Olympics " (2004, 2007, 2009, 2011) and in the Arby's Classic, a tournament in the US - State of Tennessee , December 2012. Many of the players he sponsored at the Urspring School subsequently received scholarships at universities in the United States. At times, Junge was an assistant coach on the staff of the German U16 national team.

In the summer of 2014, Junge switched to the second division club Nürnberger BC as head coach and sports director . On the occasion of his departure from the Urspring School, the sports hall there was renamed the Junge-Halle. After the departure of the sole shareholder and main sponsor following the 2015/16 season, Junge founded Basketball Nürnberg GmbH with fellow campaigners and put together a budget within a short time (including through donations and the acquisition of new sponsors). In July 2016, the team was granted the license for the 2nd Bundesliga Pro A.

In August 2018, Junge led a selection of German and US players to win an international invitation tournament in Shanghai, China, endowed with $ 200,000 in prize money . In the 2018/19 season, Junge led the Nuremberg team to the final series of the 2nd Bundesliga ProA and thus to promotion to the basketball Bundesliga . In the first final his team prevailed at home with 90:87 against Hamburg , but lost in the second leg with 94:99 and was thus runner-up. In a vote carried out by the 2nd Bundesliga, Junge was voted coach of the year for the second division season 18/19. At the beginning of September 2019, he handed over the office of Nuremberg trainer to his previous assistant Vytautas Buzas in order to devote himself more to his duties as managing director, but also remained assistant trainer and sports director. When Buzas returned to his home country Lithuania at the beginning of December 2019 for family reasons, Junge took over the position of head coach of the Nuremberg team again for the time being.
