Sascha Hupmann (born April 21, 1970 in Munich ; † April 12, 2020 in Evansville , Indiana , United States ) was a German basketball player . It was 2.16 meters tall and was used as a center .

Life

Hupmann began his career at the DJK Sportbund Munich, where he played in what was then the 2nd Bundesliga South at the age of 16. At Christmas 1988, Hupmann moved to a high school in Michigan in the United States as an exchange student .

Hupmann played for TVG Trier , Bayer Leverkusen , ALBA Berlin , Panathinaikos Athens , Iraklis Saloniki and TSG Humana Ehingen. He was also a long member of the German national basketball team .

Hupmann attended the University of Evansville in the US state of Indiana from 1989 to 1993 . He came in 97 missions for Evansville on averages of 8.7 points and 7.4 rebounds and two blocked opposing throws. He broke his metatarsus three times while at the University of Evansville . At the university, Hupmann was at times fellow student of Ralph Junge . He began his professional career in 1993 at TVG Trier alongside James Marsh , Sergej Babkow and Carl Brown . After one season he moved to the reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen. There he established himself as a center that provided easy points under the basket. Together with the wingers Denis Wucherer and Henning Harnisch as well as the then construction player Michael Koch , he formed the core of those Bayer teams that won the German championship seven times in a row up to 1996. During this phase, Hupmann also became a national player.

In 1996, Hupmann switched to the then series runner-up, Alba Berlin, and became German champion again. Then he made use of the Bosman judgment and moved to Greece to Panathinaikos Athens . There he won the national title and the national cup as a reserve player . Hupmann later moved to Iraklis Saloniki , but was not a regular there either. He ended his career in the 2nd Bundesliga with TSG Humana Ehingen, where he played as a coach under his friend Ralph Junge .

Hupmann last lived with his family in Evansville and worked there at a school. He died on April 12, 2020, a few days before his 50th birthday. He suffered from a rare form of ataxia , which made him dependent on a wheelchair for several years.

Hupmann's son Noah also became a basketball player.
