The Gladiators Trier ( German Gladiators of Trier ) are a German basketball team from the Rhineland-Palatinate Trier , which has played in the 2nd Bundesliga ( ProA ) since 2015 . Marco van den Berg has been Trier's head coach since 2020 . Since August 2016 the team has been called Römerstrom Gladiators Trier .

history

founding

In March 2015, Treveri Basketball AG, the operating company of Bundesliga club TBB Trier , filed for bankruptcy. Because of this and because of a violation of the license regulations, the team was deducted a total of six points from the league. The TBB ended the 2014/15 season on the penultimate place in the table and was therefore relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA .

In March 2015, the Trier ball sports movement UG was founded, which was not legally the successor to the bankrupt Treveri Basketball AG, but de facto took over the sporting legacy. At the end of May 2015, TBB's right to participate in the ProA season 2015/16 was transferred to the UG. At the end of July, the UG was converted into the Trier Ballsport Movement GmbH.

"Gladiators Trier" was chosen as the new team name, the colors green and white of the previous team TBB were adopted. The newly designed coat of arms showed a green gladiator, a basketball and the team logo. The name Gladiators should symbolize "courage, the will to win and passion", announced the then managing director Ronny Höpfner in July 2015 on the occasion of the presentation of the team name and coat of arms.

Inaugural season 2015/16

At the end of October 2015, manager Michael Lang announced that the young company was facing a financial gap due to a lack of advertising income and due to the license purchase. However, this was partially closed in the following weeks.

In their first season (2015/16) Trier reached the semi-finals of the 2nd Bundesliga ProA under the Dutch head coach Marco van den Berg , but were eliminated there against Science City Jena .

Development since 2016

On August 1, 2016, the team changed its name to Römerstrom Gladiators Trier after the Trier public utility company had taken over the naming rights. In the 2016/17 season the playoff quarter-finals were reached, where the Moselans were defeated by Chemnitz with 2: 3 wins. In the 2017/2018 season, the Gladiators reached the playoffs again with sixth place in the main round and met MLP Academics Heidelberg in the first round , which they defeated with 3-2 wins. In the semifinals Trier met the Crailsheim Merlins , who were second in the main round, and were eliminated with 1: 3 wins.

In mid-January 2018, the club announced a change of coach at the end of the 2017/18 season: Van den Berg decided to return to his home in the Netherlands; his previous assistant Christian Held would take over as head coach from the 2018/19 season onwards . Held led the team in the 2018/19 season as sixth in the championship round of the 2nd Bundesliga ProA. In the subsequent playoff quarter-finals, they lost 3-0 to the future finalists Nürnberg Falcons . Held's term of office ended in April 2020 and his successor was his predecessor, the Dutchman van den Berg.

Venue

The statutes of the Basketball Bundesliga stipulate a TV-compatible hall with at least 3000 seats as the home ground for every Bundesliga club. The city of Trier therefore had the Trier arena built, which with almost 5,000 seats more than meets the requirements of the league. The maximum capacity for basketball games is officially 5,900 seats, including around 900 standing places. The arena can be expanded with additional stands so that the capacity grows to 6,100 spectators. The number of spectators when a game is sold out varies from game to game, for example the game against FC Bayern Munich on March 17, 2012 with 5,984 guests was sold out.
