Marco van den Berg (born June 14, 1965 ) is a Dutch basketball coach . Since April 2020 he has been the head coach of Gladiators Trier in his second term .

career

Van den Berg first played soccer before he became enthusiastic about basketball. After an injury he had to give up the active career, became a co-trainer and finally a coach. In his Dutch homeland he coached the first division clubs Landstede Zwolle , Eiffel Towers Nijmegen , Omniworld Almere and GasTerra Flames Groningen .

In October 2011 he moved to neighboring Germany and took over the position of head coach at the BBC Bayreuth in the basketball league . He took over the BBC Bayreuth from the 6th day of the 2011/12 season after his predecessor Andreas Wagner was on leave from the club due to unsuccessfulness. Van den Berg reached 13th place in the basketball league with the BBC Bayreuth at the end of the season. His contract with the BBC Bayreuth was terminated on March 19, 2013 by mutual agreement. In May 2013 he started working as a coach at a Dutch basketball academy working in the field of youth talent development and remained in this position until June 2015.

From July 2015 he was the head coach of the Gladiators Trier in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA . He led the team to the semi-finals of the second-highest German division in the 2015/16 season.

In mid-January 2018, Trier announced that, for family reasons, van den Berg was returning to his home country after the end of the 2017/18 season and was taking on the management of a youth academy of the Dutch basketball association. In April 2020, Trier announced van den Berg's return to the coaching office.

Van den Berg has been married to the German SPD politician and MEP Katarina Barley since June 2020 .
