Ollesheim field airfield

The Ollesheim field airfield was near Gut Ollesheim in the municipality of Nörvenich in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

In the first half of November of 1939, which began Air Force to build a large field airfield between Nörvenich and Olle home north of the present state road 263. The size of the airfield was 75 ha. The crew quarters were under tall trees that still exist today, compared to the farm built in the park. So they were hardly or not at all visible to the enemy. The headquarters building was erected directly on the airfield on a row of poplar trees and was only demolished in the 1970s.

On February 20, 1940, a group of Sturzkampfgeschwader 2 (III./St.G 2) was moved here and well camouflaged on the edge of the airfield. The commanding officer was Captain Ott. The group was equipped with 39 Junkers Ju 87 B dive bombers (Stukas) . On March 10, 1940, Captain Graf Schönborn succeeded Ott.

From May 10, 1940, the day the campaign in the west began, the planes took off up to ten times a day on attack flights to the west and south-west. On May 16, 1940 the group was transferred to Sedan- Neufchatau.
