Gary Johnson (basketball player)
Gary Lee Johnson (born December 15, 1982 in Tuscaloosa , Alabama ) is an American - German basketball coach and former player. As a 1.88 meter tall construction player, he worked as a professional mostly in Germany.
Player career
Johnson played in his native USA at university level from 2001 to 2003 for the Schoolcraft College in the state of Michigan and from 2003 to 2005 for the University of Central Florida . On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the "UCF" basketball team in 2008, Johnson was ranked among the top 40 players who had worn the team's jersey up until then.
In 2005 he began his career as a professional basketball player with the Irish first division club UCC Demons Cork. After a year on the “Green Island”, Johnson moved to BG Südpark Bochum, for which he competed in the German regional league in the 2006/07 season. Another year followed in the Regionalliga, but not in Bochum, but at SVD 49 Dortmund .
In the 2008/09 season he was under contract with the Hertener Löwen in the 2. Bundesliga ProB and was named the best defender of the ProB season by the internet service eurobasket.com. From 2009 to 2012 he played for BV Chemnitz 99 in the 2. Bundesliga ProA , following the 2011/12 season, eurobasket.com named him the best development player and the best defender of the season.
In 2012/13 Johnson strengthened the Düsseldorf Baskets , in 2013/14 the Oettinger Rockets (both 2nd Bundesliga ProA). Between 2014 and 2016 he played for ETB Essen in the ProA, at the end of his career he played for VfL Bochum in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB in the 2016/17 season .
Coaching career
After the 2016/17 season, Johnson ended his playing career and became head coach of the Bochum team. In the 2017/18 season he led VfL into the ProB quarter-finals. In February 2019, Johnson was removed from office in Bochum after the team had lost six of the previous ten games under his leadership. During the summer break of 2019, Regionalliga promoted BSV Wulfen introduced Johnson as the new head coach. In 2020, in addition to his job in Wulfen, he became coach of the Metropol Baskets Ruhr community in the youth basketball league (NBBL).
