The BBC Magdeburg ( Basketball Club Magdeburg) was a basketball club from Magdeburg .
history
First division basketball was played at the Technical University of Magdeburg in the 1980s. The greatest successes in 1988 and 1989 were the GDR championship . After German reunification , the team played as USC Magdeburg in the 2nd basketball league in 1991/92 in the North Group, in which they only achieved one win of the season and were immediately relegated. Well-known players from back then, such as Erik Hebold and Achim Grossmann, now play for the BBC Magdeburg in the oldies.
The BBC Magdeburg was founded in 2002. Since then, the club played with the first men's team in the Regionalliga Nord until 2013. In addition, the club dedicated itself to the youth work and had other teams in the league with the second team and the oldie team. During this time the association operated under BG Magdeburg .
The restructuring for the 2011/2012 season meant that one focused primarily on the 1st men's team. The oldie team continued to play in league operations for the 2012/2013 season and with an A-youth team in cooperation with the USC they also took part in the game operations. In addition, a “Subway Basketball Academy” was operated in cooperation with the Subway franchise chain, which was supposed to ensure the long-term preservation of young talent in Magdeburg.
With the runner-up in the 2012/2013 season, the highest since 2003, no promotion from the 1st Regionalliga Nord could be achieved from a sporting point of view. However, the club campaigned for promotion to the 2nd basketball division ProB and ProA at the same time . This could be realized through the economically justified license withdrawal of the Düsseldorf basketball club Düsseldorf Baskets and a successful wildcard procedure.
From the 2013/2014 season in the ProA, the 1st men's team of the BBC Magdeburg called itself, as part of the campaign "Ottostadt Magdeburg", "Otto Baskets", which has been propagated since 2010. This should strengthen the association's connection with the city and further increase its level of awareness. In terms of sport, however, the team was unable to convince in 2013/2014 and was relegated to the ProB as last in the table . Significant financial difficulties became known on June 24, 2014. On the same day a relicensing procedure was initiated, as a result of this procedure the already granted ProB license was initially withdrawn. As part of the relicensing process, it was found that license conditions had been violated and that the economic situation had changed significantly compared to the original license application. However, on July 30, the BBC Magdeburg's objection to the license withdrawal was granted, so that the ProB license was granted again for the 2014/15 season.
In April 2015, the license for the 2014/15 season was subsequently withdrawn from the BBC Magdeburg. This decision was made by the league due to doubts about economic performance and liquidity during the current season. Despite the league's request, the team did not provide any evidence. Due to this decision, the BBC Magdeburg was also determined as a sporting relegation from the ProB. In addition, the league refused to grant the team its license for the 2015/16 season (ProB) due to a lack of evidence of economic efficiency and adequate promotion of young talent. The team finally played in the 1st Regionalliga Nord in 2015/16 and was relegated penultimate. The club waived its right to participate in the 2nd Regionalliga Nord-Ost in the 2016/17 season and was the first to be relegated.
In 2017 the last remaining team of the BBC moved to the 1st Magdeburg BC.

Promotion of young talent
There has been an active promotion of young talent in Magdeburg since the establishment of the “BBC Rookie Academy” in 2004 (since 2011/2012 “Subway Basketball Academy”).
This association was founded under the direction of the USC Magdeburg, basketball department, and in cooperation with the BBC Magdeburg. The aim was to create an increased awareness of basketball in Magdeburg and the surrounding area and to provide the Magdeburg Börde region with good young players in the long term . Conceptually, a two-part strategy was followed, which aimed at attracting young talent through all local schools through working groups and irregular events, and funding was carried out by the Academy itself. This involved training with fixed training times a week in various school sports halls and forming teams in the U14, U16 and U18 areas.
Every year basketball camps were held during the winter and Easter holidays in cooperation with the BBC Magdeburg. At these events, players from the 1st men's team accompanied the youngsters during training.
Home ground and cheerleading
The club's venue was the Hermann-Gieseler-Halle . Today it offers space for around 2000 visitors. While the number of visitors in the hall seldom exceeded 150 in the founding years of the club, in recent years 500 visitors have regularly been counted at home games of the Baskets. On November 22nd, 2014 a sponsorship campaign attracted 1098 visitors.
The Otto Baskets were supported by the Magdeburg cheerleading association “Guardian Angels Magdeburg”, which has been cooperating with the BBC Magdeburg since 2010. In addition, from the 2012/2013 season, the “Flowjob” breakdance crew was an integral part of bridging the breaks.
