On July 15, 1850, the men's gymnastics club 1850 Stade was founded. This club merged on September 14, 1923 with the gymnastics club Jahn 1899 Stade to form the Turnerbund 1850 Stade . In the same year, some former members of the football department of TV Jahn resigned and merged with the Stader Sportclub in 1909 to form the Stader Sportverein . A short time later, the MTV Stade footballers joined Stader SV as part of the clean divorce , which was henceforth called Stader Sportclub 1923 . Finally, this club merged on September 20, 1945 with the TB 1850 Stade to form today's VfL Stade. For July 1, 2016 merged the TuS Guildenstern Stade and JFV Stade with VfL Stade. After the end of the Second World War , VfL rose to the then second-rate Hamburg Association League in 1947 and immediately became runner-up in the Elbe season behind FC Altona 93 . Two years later, the Stader qualified for the now single-track Hamburg amateur league , to which they belonged until 1960. Three years later, VfL returned to the Hamburg upper house for a year. It was not until 1975 that they returned to the Hamburg amateur league when the Stader managed to get promoted because of the better goal difference against SC Urania Hamburg . Under coach Gerhard Mewes, VfL became Hamburg champions in 1979, but missed the leap into the Oberliga Nord as third in the promotion round .

Four years later, the Stader were relegated to the state league. In 1986 the A-Juniors became North German Cup winners. The most successful era of the club began when the team moved up into the first men's team almost completely. Tied on points with Holsatia Elmshorn , he returned to the Hamburg Association in 1987 . Three years later, VfL became unbeaten Hamburg champions and made the leap into third division in the promotion round . Striker Dirk Dammann alone , who moved to FC St. Pauli at the end of the season, scored 51 goals this season. League chairman Gerhard Schanz announced after the promotion that he wanted to be in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga in three years . After the most successful league season in 1990/91 , which ended in ninth place, things went haywire in the club. Eight players left VfL and the newcomers did not turn out to be reinforcements.

With only two wins, the Stader rose from bottom of the table in the 1991/92 season . In the meantime, the club had moved from Hamburg to the Lower Saxony Football Association . In the Association League Lower Saxony the staders were passed through as the bottom of the table and the Landesliga Ost could not be held in 1994. A year later, the fourth relegation in a row caused the fall in the district league Lüneburg-West . In 1999 he was promoted to the Landesliga Lüneburg , which was followed three years later by the leap to the Lower Saxony League East . After two relegations in a row, the staders were back in the district league in 2006. A year later, he was directly promoted to the regional league, followed by relegation to the district league in 2013.

When the merger came into effect on July 1, 2016, footballers from VfL Stade started as VfL Güldenstern Stade . In the last season before the merger, both clubs played in the district league Lüneburg 4. TuS Güldenstern finished fourth, while VfL came in at twelfth place. VfL Güldenstern Stade started in the district league Lüneburg 4 in 2016 and two years later secured promotion to the regional league Lüneburg.

The home games are played in the Stadtwerke Stadion on the Ottenbeck sports complex with 2,000 seats. The club will also use the Güldenstern sports facility.

Handball

In 2009, the Stader handball players were promoted to the third-class Regionalliga Nord . In the same year the team qualified for the DHB Cup , where the VfL women reached the third round and failed there at HSG Blomberg-Lippe . After a league reform, the handball players played in the third division north in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons . After VfL played in the league in 2012/13, the team returned to the 3rd division in 2013/14 . Then Stade rose again from the league. In 2017 Stade returned to the 3rd division. The team has been back in the major league since the 2018/19 season.
