Mladen Drijenčić

Mladen Drijenčić (born July 9, 1965 in Vareš ) is a German basketball coach of Bosnian-Herzegovinian origin. He is the head coach of the German first division club EWE Baskets Oldenburg .

Coaching career

Drijenčić began his career as a full-time coach at SC Bayer 05 Uerdingen . He looked after youth teams and the club's first men's team, which he led, among other things, to promotion to the 1st regional league.

In 2009 he was appointed to the coaching staff of the German U18 national team for the first time and was part of the team for the European Championship in France as an assistant coach. In 2010, 2011 and 2012 he also took part in European Championship tournaments as assistant coach of the German U18 team.

In 2010 he was signed by the Oldenburg TB , took over the club's regional league team as head coach and also worked in the youth field. In 2012, he led the men's team as a master of the first Regionalliga Nord for promotion to the third highest German basketball class 2. Bundesliga Pro B . The name of the team had been changed to Baskets Akademie Weser-Ems / Oldenburger TB and underlined the character of a talent factory for the Oldenburg Bundesliga team.

In the 2012/13 season, "BAWE / OTB" managed to move into the championship round as fourth in the table in the northern season of Pro B , where they were eliminated in the first round. Drijenčić was named the best coach of the season by the Internet portal Eurobasket.com.

In the following season (2013/14) he led the team to the Pro-B championship title, again Drijenčić received the award of coach of the year from Eurobasket.com. But the club decided not to move up to the Pro A .

At the 2013 European Championships he was an assistant to the then national coach Frank Menz on the staff of the German national team.

In the 2014/15 season Drijenčić had led "BAWE / OTB" to the Pro B playoff quarter-finals before he was promoted to head coach of the Bundesliga team EWE Baskets Oldenburg in March 2015 after Sebastian Machowski had been fired. His successor in the Pro-B team, Christian Held , then led the Oldenburg junior team to win the Pro B title again .

A few weeks after taking office, Drijenčić won the German cup competition with EWE Baskets Oldenburg in his own hall . In the Bundesliga championship round, Oldenburg was eliminated under Drijenčić in the quarter-finals.

On May 27, 2015, his contract with EWE Baskets Oldenburg was extended for the following season, 2015/16. In January 2016 he signed a new contract until 2017 and extended it in February 2017 to 2018.

At the beginning of May 2018, Drijenčić was given a further contract extension by the Oldenburg team, he signed a new working paper that will run until 2020. He led the team to the semi-finals in the 2018/19 game year, where they lost to Berlin.

Personal

Drijenčić comes from the Croatian minority in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He fled to Germany in 1994. In Krefeld he worked as a mechanical engineer and played basketball in the regional league at BBC Krefeld and later at SC Bayer 05 Uerdingen .

His son Robert is a basketball player and is in the squad of the third division Baskets Akademie Weser-Ems / Oldenburger TB.
