Virgil Micheaux Matthews (born July 17, 1983 ) is an American basketball player .

career

Matthews first played at Centralia College in Washington State during his university days , followed by two more years at the University of Montana . In his final 2005/06 season, the playmaker scored an average of 10.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists per match.

He gained his first experience as a professional basketball player in the 2nd basketball league at Munich Basket . Between his engagements in Germany (2008/09 with the Schwelmer Baskets in the Regionalliga, from 2010 with the Ehingen / Urspring syndicate in the second division) Matthews played for teams in the US IBL and NABL leagues. During his four seasons in Ehingen, he rose with the club as a champion of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA . After winning the title, he was named “ProB Development Player of the Year” by the internet service eurobasket.com .

In 2014, Matthews moved from Ehingen to BV Chemnitz 99 within ProA . There he was one of the best preparers of basket successes in the second highest German league until 2017 and became a favorite of the Chemnitz supporters.

In October 2017, Matthews was brought to the Nürnberg Falcons BC (also 2nd Bundesliga ProA) by Ralph Junge , under whom he had already played in Ehingen . The American returned to Chemnitz for the 2018/19 season. At the end of April 2019, he narrowly missed promotion to the Bundesliga in the ProA semifinals with Chemnitz, in the 2019/20 season, which was shortened due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, Matthews and his team were granted the right to promotion, as they were in the middle of the season at the end of the season March 2020 were leaders.
