The RheinStars Cologne are a basketball community that was founded in 2013 by SG Köln 99ers and MTV Köln . In 2015 the ASV Köln was incorporated. The first men's team plays in the third division , the women of the club in the first regional division. Two youth teams play in the NBBL and JBBL .

history

After the Cologne 99ers filed for bankruptcy in 2009, there has been no professional basketball club in Cologne since the 2009/2010 season . On June 12, 2013, the cooperation between SG Köln 99ers and MTV Köln to form the basketball community RheinStars Köln was announced. Establishing the goal was declared a return within the next three to five years Bundesliga team to establish the men's area in Cologne.

In order to be able to tackle this project, a GmbH was founded. Stephan Baeck is the managing director and partner of RheinStars Basketball GmbH . The syndicate has been the second largest basketball club in Germany since December 31, 2014 with 680 members.

2013/2014 season

At the first season opening in the club's history, the first men's team competed against Bundesliga club and Euroleague participant FC Bayern Munich . Bayern won with a final score of 37: 101.

The Cologne-based company Weinor has agreed to be the main sponsor for three years. The logo can be seen on the jerseys of men in the 2nd regional league and women in the 2nd Bundesliga as well as on the jerseys of the NBBL and JBBL teams.

The former Bundesliga professional Johannes Strasser , who moved from the Artland Dragons to Cologne, was hired as coach .

On the 17th matchday the men of RheinStars Cologne achieved early promotion to the 1st regional league with their 17th win in their 17th game at ART Düsseldorf.

Both women and men played in cup competitions this season. The men of the RheinStars reached the cup final directly in the first season, but lost there against the Elephants Grevenbroich. The women's team had to return to the regional league after just one season (4 wins, 18 defeats). The season was very different for the youth teams of the NBBL and JBBL. The NBBL was able to qualify after a strong main round (10 wins, 4 defeats) with 2nd place for the playoffs. However, they were eliminated in the first round in the round of 16 against the Baskets Akademie Weser-Ems with a 0-2 defeat. The JBBL team had to fight relegation after a weak main round (3 wins, 7 losses) in the relegation round. But there they got 8 wins in 9 games and were able to secure their premature relegation.

Season 2014/2015

As in the 13/14 season, the RheinStars were able to win FC Bayern Munich Basketball for their season opener. Since the sports hall in the Nippeser Tälchen was sold out after just one day, the decision was made to move to the Lanxess Arena in Deutz. The game ended 60:97 for Bayern. On March 28, 2015, the RheinStars were promoted to the third-class ProB.

2015/2016 season

After the end of the 2014/15 season, due to the withdrawal of the Artland Dragons, the RheinStars had the opportunity to advance directly to the ProA with a wildcard. This wild card was issued on May 30, 2015 by the 2nd Bundesliga basketball division. The prerequisite was that the Crailsheim Merlins received a wildcard for the basketball league - this was the case. In order to meet the standards of the ProA, a partial move to the Lanxess Arena is planned for the season 15/16. There should be at least five league games over the course of the season. Head coach Johannes Strasser resigned for the new season to concentrate on his studies. Arne Woltmann was hired as the new head coach . He was Chris Fleming's assistant at Brose Baskets Bamberg for many years . After being on the playoff course in the first half of the season, performance deteriorated in the second half and the season ended in 12th place.

Season 2016/2017

Head coach Woltmann was dismissed on March 9, 2017. At the time of the separation, the Cologne team were tenth in the table, so no place that would mean the playoff participation. Assistant coach Matt Dodson took over the post, as his assistant was the former head coach Johannes Strasser. Dodson led Cologne as eighth of the points round in the playoffs, where they were clearly defeated in the first round (quarter-finals) to the Central German BC (0: 3 wins).

Season 2017/2018

For the new season, the former national player Denis Wucherer was introduced as the new head coach of the RheinStars, interim coach Dodson moved back to the assistant position. Previously, Wucherer was head coach for the sporting fortunes of the Gießen 46ers and led them to promotion to the basketball league in 2015 . The Cologne-based company linked Wucherer's commitment with a clear objective: the new coach “should lead the RheinStars from the 2nd basketball league ProA to the upper house”, according to the club's report. This goal did not succeed. In the 2017/18 season, Cologne reached the playoffs as fourth in the table, but had to admit clearly defeated Karlsruhe in the first round . At the beginning of May 2018, Wucher's departure was announced after just one year, and the coach moved back to the Bundesliga.

Also in May 2018, the RheinStars announced their withdrawal into the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. “The hosting of our games in the Lanxess Arena has placed a disproportionately heavy burden on the budget for a ProA team in recent years. However, there is no alternative to the Lanxess Arena due to the minimum capacity of 1,500 spectators required for the 2nd division in Cologne, so we decided on the ProB ”, the management explained this step. At the same time it was emphasized that the basketball league would be retained as an objective.

Season 2018/2019

In mid-May 2018, assistant coach Dodson was promoted again to head coach. The Cologne team rose in the 2018/19 season as bottom of the table in the southern season of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB and the subsequent round of relegation from the third-highest German league. Numerous injuries had contributed to missing relegation.

Season 2019/2020

Johannes Strasser returned to the coaching post after relegation to the 1st regional league and replaced the Australian Dodson. In August 2019, the heads of RheinStars eV and RheinStars Basketball GmbH announced the plan to convert a former tennis hall in the Bickendorf district into a basketball training facility with, among other things, five playing fields, strength and physiotherapy rooms as well as offices for the club and GmbH administration . RheinStars Basketball GmbH became the owner of the hall. The goal was given to turn the hall into a Cologne basketball center and to serve as a “breeding ground for a high-quality professional area”. In mid-March 2020, the season in the 1st Regionalliga West was terminated prematurely due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus . With 23 wins and two defeats Cologne, who were in first place in the table, were champions and had acquired the right to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. The best scorer of the Cologne team in 2019/20 were Tibor Taras (20.8 points / game) and the American Vincent Golson (14.4 points / game).

2020/2021 season

At the beginning of July 2020, permission to participate in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB was granted.
