Christopher (Chris) Fleming (born March 3, 1970 ) is a retired American basketball player and current coach .

Career

Fleming played in the United States from 1984 to 1988 for Lacey Township High School and 1989 to 1993 for the University of Richmond. In 1994 he moved to Germany to TSV Quakenbrück (later Artland Dragons ), which was still playing in the regional league at the time , and for which he was active for six years. After his active career ended in 2000, he became head coach and led the Quakenbrücker to the basketball league in 2002/03 . In 2008 the club won the German cup competition under his leadership.

At the end of May 2008, Fleming signed a contract with the BBL league competitor Brose Baskets Bamberg, where he succeeded the national coach at the time, Dirk Bauermann . Under his leadership, Brose Baskets won the championship four times in a row and the trophy three times. After an early exit in the 2014 play-offs, Fleming was released from his duties as head coach in Bamberg. On May 28, 2014, he was dismissed as trainer for Brose Baskets Bamberg with immediate effect.

In the summer of 2014, Fleming was a member of the coaching staff of the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Summer League . In the 2015/2016 season he was assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets in the NBA , in July 2016 Fleming moved within the league to the Brooklyn Nets , where he took over the same position.

From December 1, 2014, he was also the head coach of the German national basketball team . In 2005, during his time as Quakenbrücker head coach, he had already looked after the German U-20 national team as national coach. During his tenure as national coach in 2015, Fleming was also a member of a top sports committee that had been set up by the German Basketball Federation, the Basketball Bundesliga, the 2nd Bundesliga and the regional associations to advise the leagues and associations. In March 2017, he confirmed his planned resignation as German national coach after the 2017 European Championships , as the introduction of international matches during the season meant that he would no longer be able to work as an assistant coach at the NBA club Brooklyn. His last game as national coach was the quarter-finals defeat against Spain on September 12, 2017 at the European Championship. Henrik Rödl was his successor .

During the 2019 summer break, after three years in Brooklyn, he joined the Chicago Bulls as an assistant coach .

Private life

Fleming has been married to his wife Anne, who comes from Quakenbrück, since 2007; the couple have two sons and a daughter.

March 5, 2017, accessed on September 6, 2017 : “After the European Championships in Tel Aviv and Istanbul (August 31 to September 17), he will hand over responsibility to his assistant Henrik Rödl. "I think it's Henrik's job then." Fleming was an assistant coach at the NBA club Brooklyn Nets. The introduction of international matches during the season means that another double function is not possible. "It would certainly be difficult for me to continue as an NBA coach," said Fleming.
