Yakovos Bilek

Yakovos Bilek (born July 7, 1917 in Izmir , then Smyrna ; † May 4, 2005 in Athens ) was a native Greek basketball coach who settled in Germany.

Bilek was a Greek from Smyrna. He was initially an active player. Between 1947 and 1948 he played a total of eight international matches for the Turkish national team. In 1951 he received the referee license of the World Basketball Federation ( FIBA ) and participated as a referee twice in the Olympic Games . In 1960 he directed an Olympic final round match between the Soviet Union and Brazil .

In 1962, Bilek moved with his family to the Federal Republic and joined the coaching staff of the German Basketball Association . As a national coach, Bilek was also a member of the national coaching council of the DBB, which in autumn 1968, under the leadership of the DBB's vice-president and sports manager Anton Kartak , nominated fifty players for the '1972 Olympic squad', of which ten national players for the DBB after intensive preparation by the squad players Team at the 1972 Summer Olympics .

He was a member of the DBB's coaching staff in various functions until 1982. Among other things, he was national coach of the German men's national team for eight years .

Later Bilek got involved as a trainer in the basketball department of VfL 1848 Bad Kreuznach , his adopted home. There he performed tasks in both the senior and junior sectors.

In 1974 he took on German citizenship .
