Henrik Dettmann (born April 5, 1958 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish basketball coach who headed the German men's national team from 1997 to 2003 . Since 2004 he has been responsible for the Finnish national team, which he had coached from 1992 to 1997.

Career

Dettmann worked as a trainer at Helsingin NMKY ( German  Christian Association of Young People in Helsinki ) from 1973 . Until 1986 he was junior or assistant coach of the club, then until 1992 as head coach of the team. In 1987, 1989 and 1992 he was Finnish champion and during this time he was twice named “Trainer of the Year” (1987, 1992) in Finland. At the same time, Dettmann has looked after various Finnish youth national teams since 1981. From 1992 to 1997 he was head coach of the senior national team and led them to their first European Championship participation since 1977 in 1995.

On September 1, 1997, he surprisingly took over the position of German national coach for many. Thanks mainly to Dirk Nowitzki , the team was able to reach the semi-finals at the 2001 European Championships and the bronze medal at the 2002 World Championships, which is their best result at the World Championships so far. In 2002 Dettmann was named “Trainer of the Year” in Germany and (across all sports) in Finland.

After the disappointing performance at the European Championships in 2003 and the resulting missed qualification for the Olympic Games, Dettmann's contract, which was due to expire on October 31, was not extended by the DBB . Shortly before, he had signed with the Mitteldeutscher BC , with whom he won the FIBA EuroCup Challenge in 2004. However, due to the insolvency of the association, he subsequently left and signed with BS / Energy Braunschweig , where Dettmann worked until the beginning of 2006. In January 2010 he took over briefly until end of season the sporting management of the French club Jeanne d'Arc from Dijon , he but not before descending from the first French league LNB Pro A was able to preserve. With the Finnish national team, which he coached again since 2004, Dettmann qualified for the European Championships in 2011 and 2013 , in which Finland reached the intermediate round, and took part in the 2014 World Championships . Between February and October 2015 he was head coach of the Turkish club Beşiktaş Integral Forex .

For the 2016/17 season, Dettmann was hired by the French first division club Strasbourg IG as head coach, but was already on leave on October 27, 2016. Under Dettmann's leadership, SIG had lost four out of five games in the LNB Pro A and was second to last. In the FIBA Champions League , the Finn coached the team in two games, both of which ended in defeats.

Others

Dettmann is married to the former Czech national basketball player and Bundesliga player Mirka Dettmann (née Jarchovská ).
