The 2016/17 season was the 24th season of the French Ligue Nationale de Basket Pro A , the top division in the French men's basketball club . It was the 95th championship in French men's basketball and the 30th championship since the Ligue Nationale de Basket (LNB) was founded . The main round started on September 23, 2016 and ended in May 2017 with the 34th and final game day. The play-off final round for the championship lasted until June 23, 2017.
ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne started the season as the defending champion . With Lyon, Strasbourg IG , AS Monaco and Le Mans Sarthe Basket , four clubs competed in the 2016/17 Basketball Champions League . Four French teams also played in the FIBA Europe Cup 2016/17 , namely Élan Sportif Chalonnais , BCM Gravelines , JSF Nanterre and EB Pau-Lacq-Orthez . Nanterre won the FIBA Europe Cup in a purely French final against Chalon. No French team took part in the competitions organized by the ULEB.
ESSM Le Portel and Hyères Toulon Var Basket were promoted for the 2016/17 season .
French champion was Élan Sportif Chalonnais , who prevailed in the final series against Strasbourg IG with 3-2 victories. For Chalon it was the second championship win.
