The building, opened in 1991, has an octagonal floor plan and four pillars in the corners; who carry the roof. Glass elements are inserted into the roof of the arena with a height of 28 meters; which let light into the interior. The outer facade is glazed with an area of 4,500 m 2 .

history

The Palais des Sports de Pau began in 1988 with a meeting between the President of the basketball club Élan Béarnais Orthez, Peter Seillant, and the then mayor of Pau, André Labarrère . The previous venue, La Moutète in Orthez , no longer met the club's requirements after winning the Korać Cup in 1984 and the French championships in 1986 and 1987. For economic reasons, they moved from Orthez (around 10,000 inhabitants) to the larger town of Pau ( approx. 85,000 inhabitants). The construction of the hall was agreed. The construction project designed by the architects Jean-Michel Lamaison and Michel Camborde began a year later and the opening was celebrated 18 months later.

In the presence of many guests, Laurent Fabius , then President of the National Assembly , together with Association President Peter Seillant and Mayor André Labarrère opened the multi-purpose hall built for FRF 78 million on January 12, 1991 . In 2000 the paint on the facade was renewed and six years later the damage caused by a fire in the clubhouse had to be repaired. The hall has hosted the French Davis Cup team several times (semi-finals 1991 against Yugoslavia; quarter-finals and semi-finals 1999 against Brazil and Belgium; quarter-finals 2002 against the Czech Republic; quarter-finals 2006 against Russia). The Palais des Sports de Pau was one of the venues for the 1999 European men's basketball championship and the 2007 women's handball world championship . The Palais des Sports in Pau also serves as a venue for concerts .
